Community Garden Looking Good

\"Farm

By CNBNews.net

The Gloucester City Community Garden, Market and Atlantic Streets, is in full bloom. The project is sponsored by the Gloucester City Shade Committee. John Schmidt a member of the committee and one of the organizers of the garden was asked to give a progress report on the project.

\"Farm Schmidt writes,

We have had many residents from the neighborhood and across the city come out and help with garden and recently we planted three dogwood bushes and one tree which were donated. Each plot is 4-5 feet by 20 feet and it is up to the gardeners what they want to plant. As part of our $60 membership with the Camden Children\’s Garden we are eligible to receive flats of vegetables. Both the committee and individuals who joined has utilized it. We have planted some squash and tomatoes in the garden but every gardener can choose what they want to plant. There is no cost for a plot as we know people are struggling however if individuals wish to make a monetary donation they can. The donations will be used for the garden.

I also want to make sure to thank Mike Devlin, who runs the Camden Children\’s Garden and without whose help this garden in the City of Gloucester City would have never happened. Mike has gone above and beyond for our committee and city.

We have three blue bins which we received from the Camden Children\’s Garden from one of the shipping companies that we use to collect water so water is available to everyone at no charge. The city also donated two composters to us for the garden and Water Supt. Fred Schindler has helped with getting water to the garden.

More Information on Proposed Layoffs of Gloucester City Employees

By CNBNEWS.net

The Gloucester City firemen have recently launched another website on \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef0111688fb252970c-120wi\" the world wide web with more stats about the city fire department. This latest site contains contact information linking the reader to local fireman Jerry Hubbs : [email protected]. It also list the email address of the site’s webmaster: [email protected]

That information was lacking from the first site named Gloucester City Firefighters leaving one to ask who was responsible for the information on the page (s). The webmaster of that page was Anthony Errickson. What connection he has to the firefighters is not known. (http://www.anthonyerrickson.com/GCFF/Welcome.htmlg)

The first snippet leads to the new firefighter’s website and the other two are to published articles that appeared last week on this topic in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier Post. Further down are links to various articles and videos on the subject that were posted on CNBNews.net over the past month. ~Bill Cleary

N.J. town\’s emotions flare amid looming firefighter layoffs

Kevin Riordan| Philadelphia Inquirer | 06/10/2010

Simple red-and-white signs around town only hint at the heat of Gloucester City\’s struggle over the looming layoffs of 15 municipal employees, including eight in the Fire Department.

The \”We Support our Gloucester City Firefighters\” placards look downright decorous compared to some of the more explosive emotions at a standing-room-only City Council meeting May 27.

But in Gloucester as elsewhere these days, political battles are fought not only via packed rooms, lawn signs, and letters to the editor, but also on websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and YouTube videos. And matters can get every bit as personal in cyberspace.

Gloucester City attempts to avoid layoffs

| courierpostonline.com | Courier-Post

The proposed firefighter layoffs — which amount to about a quarter of the 34-member department — have ignited the most outcry. Fire safety is a particularly emotional topic in the city, where a July 4th blaze in 2002 killed three firefighters and three young girls. The tragedy is memorialized in a sculpture garden outside the department\’s King Street headquarters.

Bob Brower, vice president of the New Jersey Firemen\’s Mutual Benevolent Association, said it would be irresponsible for the city to reduce its firefighting staff.

\”There\’s other places to cut money,\” said Brower, whose association represents the Gloucester City department.

\”You can\’t put a price tag on people\’s lives.\”
