Opportunity New Jersey Calls for Businesses and Government Leaders to Enact Positive Change

Opportunity New Jersey is calling on the Garden State’s business and government leaders to get New Jersey on the path to job growth and affordability.

“It’s a new year, an election year, and the start of a new decade,” said Opportunity New Jersey (ONJ) co-chairs Tom Bracken and Michele Siekerka in a joint statement. “We have a Plan for an Affordable New Jersey and look forward to working with the Governor’s office, and the offices of our Senate and Assembly leadership, to put it into action.”

Bracken (President and CEO of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce) and Siekerka (President and CEO of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association) rolled out the Plan in mid-2019, and announced the formation of an Economic Development and Advisory Council as a key tenet of the Plan’s implementation. The Council, which includes business, education, and labor representatives from throughout the state, held its inaugural meeting this past fall.

“From addressing fiscally challenged and outdated legacy systems, to stimulating job growth and investments in our state, our Plan is a roadmap to stability and prosperity in our region,” said Bracken and Siekerka, adding that New Jersey currently has among the highest personal and business taxes in the nation. “With all the extraordinary assets and advantages our state has to offer, there is no reason why we shouldn’t lead our peer states in job growth, wage growth, and business competitiveness throughout the Northeast.”

Choose the Right Venue

The venue is an important part of any Christian wedding ceremony. And it doesn\’t necessarily have to be at a church to be Christian.

outside of the traditional church setting. The most important part is making your vows before God in a location you love with the people that you love.

Don\’t Focus Solely on Yourself

Your wedding is a day for not just you and your future spouse. It is also an event joining your two families together. Find a way to involve the family members you love at the wedding.

While those around you will want to serve you, consider serving them as Christ has served you. Get to know your vendors, and bring gifts to those that help you. Be sure to talk with your friends about what\’s going on in their lives, not just about the wedding.

Plan Your Service

Planning your service is worth thought and preparation. Consider what songs and verses are important to you and representative of your relationship.

Here are the important parts of your service.

Processional and Wedding March

: First the grandparents and parents are seated. Then the minister and groom enter, followed by the wedding party. Finally, the bride enters escorted by her father.

Call to Worship and Opening Prayer

: These are opening remarks asking your guests to take part with you in worship. The opening prayer gives thanks and calls for God\’s blessing upon the service.

Giving Away the Bride and Worship Song:

This important part of the ceremony includes your families. Then a song or hymn is played which should be used as an expression of worship.

The Charge and Pledge:

The charge given by the minister reminds the couple of their marriage duties and roles. The pledge is the famous \”I do\” part of the ceremony.

Wedding Vows and Ring Exchange:

The couple promises publicly and before God to help each other grow. The rings are a promise to remain faithful to one another.

Unity Candle:

This symbolizes the union of the couple\’s hearts and lives together.

Communion:

Many couples choose to take communion as their first act in their marriage.

Pronouncement and Closing Prayer:

Here, the minister declares the couple as married. The closing prayer offers a blessing from the congregation.

Recessional:

First the couple leaves, presented as Mr. and Mrs. for the first time. Then the wedding party exists in the reverse order that they entered the ceremony.

Free fares will begin at 8 p.m. on December 31

and run through 4 a.m. on January 1.

PATCO will offer free train rides for New Year’s Eve for the fourth year in a row. The free rides are aimed at offering a responsible, convenient travel option for those who wish to enjoy New Year’s Eve festivities.

The free rides will begin at 8 p.m. on December 31, 2019 and run through 4 a.m. on January 1, 2020. During those hours, station fare gates will be open to allow free passage. If a rider boards right before 4 a.m. and reaches their destination station after 4 a.m. when the fare gates close, they are asked to pick up the red phone located at the fare gates and a Customer Service Agent will open a gate to allow exit.

PATCO will operate a special holiday schedule on New Year’s Eve with 6-car trains running every 15 minutes from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 11:30 p.m. to 3 a.m.

PATCO thanks all of its customers and the community for the last 50 years and wishes everyone a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year!

NJBIA President & CEO Michele N. Siekerka, Esq., issued the following statement today with New Jersey\’s minimum wage set to increase to $11 per hour for most workers on Jan. 1, 2020, the next step toward the phase-in of a $15 minimum wage by Jan. 1, 2024.

\”As New Jersey\’s minimum wage progresses, we continue to see what was always anticipated – businesses making necessary adjustments to afford the cost of their labor.

\”Of course, employers who can afford to pay a $15 an hour minimum wage or more to their workforce, will do so. Other smaller businesses, with their slimmer profit margins impacted by a higher minimum wage and other costly workplace mandates, will need to raise prices or reduce staff, hours or benefits to accommodate these added expenses.

\”Across the country, we are beginning to see some of the unintended consequences of $15 minimum wage increases – whether it\’s the

stalling of entry-level job growth in Seattle

restaurants adding surcharges to food bills to offset labor ordinances in California

. New Jersey has an opportunity to mitigate these and other impacts with corrective legislation.

\”NJBIA is supporting bipartisan legislation that provides for the suspension of scheduled minimum wage increases due to an economic downturn, particularly as Standard & Poor\’s has reported that New Jersey is one of 15 states at an elevated risk for fiscal distress during the next recession. As California and New York have each enacted economic off-ramps from their incremental, $15 minimum wage policies, it is purely responsible that New Jersey follows this sensible precedent.

\”NJBIA also continues to support a proposal for tax credits to employers hiring workers under 18 years old, who are now increasingly at risk of not being hired with a higher pay rate. We are also advocating for legislation establishing a task force to study the impact of minimum wage increases on businesses.

\”Expecting smaller businesses to simply continue to incur added expenses without knowing the full ramifications of a $15 minimum wage, particularly during an economic downturn, is not only unfair, but unsustainable.\”
