New Jersey’s hospitality industry could suffer long-term impacts from COVID-19 even after
the pandemic ends, according to Dr. David Fiorenza, an assistant professor of economics at Villanova University. He says the casino industry in Atlantic City will have to rethink its business model, and he doesn’t rule out the potential closure of a casino. He believes there are other actions the state can take to help the economy, including eliminating the state sales tax.

Elmer, New Jersey – Appel Farm Arts & Music Campus has announced the regional award recipients of the 2020 Scholastic Art Awards. Presented by the nonprofit organization the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the
97th Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the country\’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7-12. More than 111,000 teens submitted their best art and writing in more than 100 regions across the country. Out of 612 creative teens from Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon, Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem Counties in the South Jersey Region, 290 received regional honors, including Gold Keys, Silver Keys, Honorable Mentions, or American Visions & Voices nominations:
In celebration of this year’s regional recipients, Appel Farm is hosting The 2020 South Jersey Scholastic Art Award Ceremony at Appel
Farm Arts & Music Campus in Elmer, NJ on on Friday, March 6, from 7:00-8:30 PM.
Since the program’s founding in 1923, the Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students and include a distinguished list of alumni including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol, all of whom received recognition in the Awards when they were teens.
For Gold Key works of art and writing in the Awards’ 29 categories, including architecture, painting, flash fiction, poetry, printmaking, video game design, and more, the opportunities for recognition will continue when the works are adjudicated again on a national level by a panel of leading creative professionals. National Gold Medalists will be announced in March 2020 and will be honored during a special awards ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 4, 2020. All National Medalists are eligible for a wealth of additional opportunities, such as inclusion in the Art.Write.Now.Tour traveling exhibition, and in the The Best Teen Art and The Best Teen Writing anthologies. BROOKLAWN, NJ–(February 19, 2020)–Long-time Brooklawn resident
Yvonne
Spadora was the victim of mean spirited hoodlums, according to
FoxNews 29 report
.
Surveillance video (see below) shows two explosions outside of Mrs. Spadora around 10PM Saturday, February 15. The 94-year-old woman, who was asleep at the time of the incident, has lived in her Brooklawn
residence
since 1957.
According to police, the fireworks were thrown from two moving cars.
Brooklawn police said the explosions started a fire in a bush outside of Spadora\’s home. Police woke up Spadora as a neighbor used a hose to put out the fire.
“After I knocked on the door, it was hard for her to even get to the door, so if the house caught on fire God forbid anything could have happened to her. We were just seconds away from a catastrophe,\” Brooklawn Police investigator Raymond McKenney said.
Police said they think one of the cars is a dark color Dodge Charger. Police don\’t believe Spadora was targeted.

A crew member reported that they had become disabled due to fuel issues, then ran aground and began taking on water.

WILMINGTON, N.C.- The Coast Guard rescued four men after their 78-foot fishing vessel ran aground near Shackelford Banks, North Carolina, Friday morning.
Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina’s command center received a radio distress call at approximately 3:30 a.m from a crew member aboard the vessel Tamara Alane, who reported that they had become disabled due to fuel issues, then ran aground and began taking on water.
The crew members asked to be removed from the vessel due to harsh weather conditions.
An aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City launched to assist.
Once on scene, the aircrew hoisted the four crew members and transported them to Michael J. Smith Airport in Beaufort.
There were no reported injuries or visible signs of pollution. The Coast Guard will continue to monitor the situation and salvage operations.
“The fishermen did the right thing by calling us as soon as possible,” said Chief Warrant Officer Kristen Auer, command duty officer at the Sector North Carolina command center.“With the deteriorating weather conditions, the situation could have gone from bad to worse.”
