Dave Boni of Blossvale and his son Andrew came up with a great double-barreled hunt this season.
Andrew, 16, a sophomore at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, took his first deer on opening day of the Southern Zone season down in Ulster County. The next day, Dave scored with a truly big buck.
Andrew was still hunting to his stand when he heard a shot at about 7:30 a.m.
That was one of his cousins, shooting several hundred yards away and taking a nice eight-point buck. Andrew held tight, expecting to see something, and a four-point buck came sneaking through the woods from that direction. He dropped the deer at 48 yards with his 20-gauge Remington 1100.
Andrew was warmly congratulated by his dad, two uncles and four cousins, and a bunch of other people, too. As far as Dave was concerned, it would have been a perfect season if it had ended right there.
But it didn\’t.
The next day, Andrew was out trying to help his father get a deer of his own.
