Mr. Ammerman is one of many public school officials who are adamantly opposed to their teams’ competing in a wide range of sports, most notably football and basketball, against private and parochial schools throughout New Jersey. The playing field, many public school officials contend, is not level, because private schools — not just Catholic schools — can recruit students from anywhere in or outside the state, while public schools are restricted by district boundaries.
