Councilman Marchese Response To ‘Emailgate’

August 30, 2008

To Bill (Cleary):

In regards to your request for a response about an email sent to me by Paul Kain back in June of this year. First of all I\’d like to say that Paul and I have had prior communications where we may have had differences of opinion.

We also have agreed on many issues. After reading the response from the Mayor to Paul Kain, I felt as though I did not need to reply to Paul\’s e-mail. In any team situation there can be difference of opinion.

I hold no animosity towards Paul Kain. I have explained to Paul in the past that this is not personal. We are driven to accomplish the City\’s goals by trying to do what is best for our citizens and our community in a timely fashion. That’s not always the easiest thing to do in government, but we are optimistic.

In my email to Paul I was requesting information regarding his version for the plans of the new housing project on the Coast Guard site. I was obviously a little shocked and concerned by Paul\’s response to my request. I did not appreciate his sarcasm or disrespect towards me and the fact that he copied this email to all of the City\’s department heads, and other City employees. This I still do not understand, but this is something we are trying to work past for the good of the City.

My main concern is moving forward with these projects and not waiting for more studies to be completed.

To date we have still not received what was requested from Mr. Kain. The housing project is moving forward and will hopefully begin construction in the Spring of 2009.

Gloucester City Councilman Nick Marchese
