SAINT JOSEPH’S JAMES MCBRIDE TAKES HOME SILVER IN 10,000m

McBride, 4x800m Relay Represent Hawks

PRINCETON, N.J. – In his final collegiate race, graduate student James McBride (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) took home the silver medal in the 10,000m to lead the men\’s track and field team at the IC4A Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Hawks competed at Princeton University\’s Weaver Stadium from May 10-12 and took 28th place out of 47 teams.

McBride posted a time of 30:26.30 en route to his second-place finish in the 10,000m as he picked up eight of SJU\’s 11 total points on the weekend. He edged out George Mason\’s Michael Conway (30:29.95), Bucknell\’s Michael McGowan (30:30.89) and Yale\’s Matt Thwaites (30:31.28) for the silver.

SJU\’s other three points came from the 4x800m relay team of junior Tommy O’Kane (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College), senior Dave Manion (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South), sophomore Steven Butenewicz (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional), and senior Andrew Townsend (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Technical). The quartet took third in its heat in a time of 7:35.21 before posting a finals time of 7:39.17 for a sixth-place finish.

Freshman Alec Peabody (Wyncote, Pa./Abington Friends) concludes his standout freshman campaign with an 11th-place finish in the 200m in a personal-record 21.58. Peabody recorded the top freshman time in the event and just missed qualifying for the finals by .15 seconds.

Coming off of a third-place finish at last weekend\’s Atlantic 10 Championships, junior Michael Rankin (Turnersville, N.J./Paul VI) took third in his heat en route to a 13th-place finish out of 32 competitors in the 5000m (14:33.95).

Graduate student Dan Roark (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) took 16th (9:10.87) in the 3000m steeplechase while sophomore Tyler Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) finished 22nd in the 400m (48.40).


Sophomore Tyler Dougherty (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) anchored a pair of relay squads that each placed in the top 20 on the weekend. The 4x400m relay of sophomore Brendan Robert (Media, Pa./Penncrest), junior Griff Roberts (West Chester, Pa./Devon Prep), senior Garrett Barbalinardo (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), and Dougherty took 16th (3:16.01) while the 4x100m relay of juniorDerrick Henry (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek), freshmen Peabody and Christopher Banks (West Windsor, N.J./West-Windsor Plainsboro), and Dougherty rounded out the top 20 of the event in 42.54.


The meet concludes Saint Joseph\’s 2013 outdoor track and field season.

Catholic League: Cops Charge CMU \”Naked Pope\”

Bill Donohue comments on the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) female art student who dressed as the pope in a street parade, appearing naked from the waist down; her pubic hair was shaved in the shape of a cross:
 
The president of CMU, Jared Cohon, has released a statement explaining that campus police have filed misdemeanor charges against the offending student, as well as two others. His letter balances the need for freedom of expression with a commitment to fighting intolerance.
 
That is fine, but Cohon discredits real artistic merit when he says the student \”made an artistic statement that proved to be controversial.\” There is nothing artistic about this infantile anti-Catholic insult. But we appreciate his willingness not to dodge this issue.

Helen D. Baumiester (nee Wood), on May 11, 2013, of Bellmawr. Age 80.

Beloved wife of the late William. Devoted mother of Helen Mastalski (the late Ralph), Bill Baumiester (Jeana), Bob Baumiester (Carol), Tami Phillips (Tom), Tina Franks (Jay), and the late Eddie Baumiester. Dear sister of Dorothy Perry. Loving grandmother of 11, great grandmother of 23 and great great grandmother of 5. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Helen was a Deacon and crossing guard at Annunciation BVM Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the viewing Tuesday evening from 7 to 9pm and Wednesday morning from 8:45 to 9:45am at GARDNER FUNERAL HOME, RUNNEMEDE.

Funeral Mass 10:30am at St. Joachim Parish, Annunciation BVM Church, Bellmawr.

Interment New St. Mary’s, Bellmawr.

PRINCETON, N.J. – Continuing her record-breaking rookie campaign, freshman standout Dannah Hayward (Wilkes Barre, Pa,/James M. Coughlin) once again broke her own school record in the 400H to lead the women\’s track and field team at the ECAC Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Hawks competed at Princeton University\’s Weaver Stadium from May 10-12.

Hayward ran a 1:00.11 in the preliminaries to post the second-fastest performance in her heat before taking a seventh-place finish in the finals (1:01.55) to earn the Hawks\’ only two points on the weekend. With her new personal-record time of 1:00.11, the freshman took more than an entire second off of her previous PR (1:01.25) in the event, which she ran at the Penn Relays back on April 25.

The 4x400m relay team of juniors Mercedes Yanora (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer), Jaclyn Kogut (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett Square), sophomore Marina Rufo (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor), and juniorKatie Pratt (Beaverton, Ore./Aloha) posted SJU\’s second fastest performance of the season in 3:52.71 for 24th place.

Junior Erin James (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) represented Saint Joseph\’s in the 3000m steeplechase and took 15th in 10:50.20. At the conclusion of her junior campaign, James holds the team\’s fastest times on the season in both the 3000m steeplechase (10:38.93) and 5000m (17:31.41).

The meet concludes Saint Joseph\’s 2013 outdoor track and field season.
