His career with his favorite football team inspired the 2006 sports drama \”Invincible\” in which actor Mark Wahlberg plays Papale, an underdog who in 1976 tried out for the Eagles at 30 years old. His playing career ended in 1979 after a shoulder injury. Since he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001, the Cherry Hill resident has used his fame as a platform to urge others to get screened and spread awareness of the disease.
