Camden County History Month to Feature More Than Fifty History Events

Camden NJ—The Camden County History Alliance invites the public to join us for Camden County History Month from October 1 to October 31, 2025, when over twenty participating historic sites and history organizations throughout Camden County will be open with special exhibits, reenactments, and guided tours for adults and children, both in-person and virtual, spanning centuries of history. The vast majority of the more than fifty events and activities during the month are free.

As we anticipate America’s 250th, embark on a History Sail on the Schooner North Wind with Gloucester City Sail to hear about the American Revolution along the Delaware River on  October 5 ($38 tickets), or come early for the free open house aboard the schooner. Learn how to sew a colonial pocket or knapsack with the Museum of the American Revolution at the Indian King Tavern Museum on October 4 ($80 tickets). Watch a video about the Daughters of the American Revolution with Ye Olde Newton-Nassau Chapter, NSDAR all month long. Attend a presentation on “Slavery, Abolition, and the American Revolution” held at the Haddonfield Friends Meeting on October 20.

Explore more of Camden County’s African American history by participating in a walking tour and historical market installation for the NJ Historical Commission’s Black Heritage Trail with The Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project on October 19 ($10 donation suggested), followed by a Gospel Singalong. Celebrate restoration work at the Peter Mott House with Lawnside Historical Society on October 11, and hear about plans for new museums in Camden and Atlantic at the Lawnside Historical Society’s zoom meeting on October 9. Tour historic Pomona Hall and the Enslaved Africans of Pomona Hall exhibit at the Camden County Historical Society on October 5. 

Visitors will have the opportunity to tour several historic buildings from across three centuries throughout the county during October. Tours of the historic 1825 Collings-Knight House and its historical and pollinator gardens will be offered on October 5, and the 1816 Barclay Farmstead Museum will be open for tours on October 5 and Wednesday afternoons in October ($3-$5 tickets). The Camden County Historical Society will offer self-guided tours of its museum and 1726/1788 Pomona Hall on Thursday afternoons. The simple 1828 Newton Friends Meetinghouse can be toured on October 5, while the ornate St. Joseph’s Polish Catholic Church from the early 20th century can be toured on October 11. 

Families will enjoy the Paint the Pumpkin event at the Burrough-Dover House in Pennsauken on October 5, as well as Family Day & Fleet Fest at the Battleship New Jersey on October 11, which will feature firetrucks through the ages and family-friendly activities ($20-$30 tickets). Dress like a pirate to receive a treat at the Privateer, Patriot, and Pirates tours at the 1756 Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum on October 12 & 26, and watch the neighborhood Halloween Parade on October 26.

Other Halloween-themed activities include The Rocky Horror Show at Ritz Theatre Company on October 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 29, and 31, with the final show held at midnight ($35 tickets). The Historical Society of Haddonfield will offer Haunted Haddonfield Walking Tours on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 10-25 ($20 tickets). The Gloucester Township Historic & Scenic Preservation Committee will sponsor a Halloween Paranormal Night on October 11 at the Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum (tickets $20). The Haddon Heights Historical Society will host a presentation on The Jersey Devil on October 20. 

Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Historic Berlin Railroad Depot, built in 1856, which will be open for tours on October 18. The Waterford Township Historical Society will have an exhibit on Replica of Atco Train Station at the Waterford Township Public Library all month long, with a Ghost Train Craft & Storytime for children on October 27. Also on October 27, the West Jersey Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will host a presentation “For a Great Vacation, Go by Train! Railroads, Tourism, and Commuters at the Jersey Shore” at the Audubon Senior Center (also available by zoom).

Fans of Walt Whitman can attend a Meet & Greet with Walt Whitman at the Whitman Stafford Farmhouse on October 18, with reenactors also present on the grounds. The farmhouse will also be open for tours on October 7. The Walt Whitman House in Camden will be hosting special tours highlighting Walt Whitman’s rise to international fame on Friday and Saturday afternoons on October 3, 4, 17, 24, & 25.

Take a walk for a meaningful cause at the March of Remembrance on October 5, joining Holocaust survivors to combat hate, with the Esther Raab Holocaust Museum & Goodwin Education Center. Learn about the Lee’s Army in Maryland with the Old Baldy Civil War Round Table on October 9 (also available by zoom). The Clementon Historical Commission will be open on October 15 at the Clementon Library, with displays on Clementon Park and Pillings Lake. There are plenty of opportunities to explore our history this month!

Camden County History Month is hosted by the Camden County History Alliance, an association of over 50 Camden County history organizations, historic sites, and support agencies. The History Alliance was created in 2016 to identify resources, increase the number of visitors, and institute projects that promote Camden County heritage. The Camden County Historical Society manages the work of the History Alliance.
