Yards Brewing Hosts ‘Real Ale Invitational’

The Yards Real Ale Invitational returns later this month at Yards Brewing Company. Discover and sample over forty unique beers from the Mid-Atlantic’s finest brewing establishments at the region’s only cask-conditioned beer festival on April 12th from 12:30pm to 4:00pm. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Yards brewing facility, surrounded by towering walls of kegs, cans, and bottles, all while indulging in truly historic brews and enjoying live music, good food and even better company.

Real Ale isn’t your typical beerfest. What makes the Real Ale Invitational truly special is that it’s all about Real Ale; beer that is unfiltered, unpasteurized and has been naturally carbonated inside a cask. Yards has played a pivotal role in reviving this brewing method, a tradition that traces back to England, over the last thirty years with their renowned Extra Special Ale (ESA). A beer that they always keep available on cask at their taproom.

A long-standing Yards tradition, the Real Ale Invitational began in 2008 as a love letter to traditional cask-conditioned beer. Nearly two decades later, it remains the brewery’s signature celebration, honoring a time-tested brewing method that shaped the way beer was enjoyed for centuries.

Beer the Way It Was Meant to Be

Real Ale, unfiltered and unpasteurized beer that is naturally carbonated inside a cask, is not a trend. It is how beer was served for most of its history. Long before modern filtration and forced carbonation, beer was drawn straight from the cask, alive and evolving, with gentle natural carbonation and full-bodied character.

In the grand timeline of brewing, today’s highly processed draft systems are the newcomer. For generations, including in 18th-century Philadelphia, cask beer fueled tavern gatherings, lively conversations, and the exchange of fresh ideas.

As Philadelphia commemorates its 250th anniversary in 2026, the Real Ale Invitational offers a flavorful nod to the way beer would have been enjoyed in those early years, pulled from a cask, shared among friends, and savored slowly. It is history in a glass, without taking itself too seriously.

“We’ve been producing real ale from the very beginning; in fact, ESA was the first beer we ever brewed as a company”, said Tom Kehoe, founder of Yard’s Brewing Company. “Our philosophy has always been to honor traditional styles and bring inspiring, quality beer to our community.”

Over 40 Cask-Conditioned Beers

Guests will sample more than 40 hand-selected cask-conditioned beers from some of the area’s finest breweries while exploring Yards’ brewhouse and packaging facility, surrounded by towering walls of kegs, cans and bottles. Think an IPA infused with terpenes, a spiced English porter, a barrel aged Belgian quad, or even a habanero-watermelon pale ale. You can truly come across any number of creations here.

“Bringing breweries together from across the region isn’t just about celebrating great beer. It is  also about recognizing the shared history, passion, and creativity that drives our craft. Our motto  has always been ‘brew unto others’, to encourage everyone to get together, enjoy good brews, and each other’s company. This event is the culmination of everything we stand for”, said Kehoe when asked about why the event means so much to him and his company.
