Gloucester City Reaches Agreement with 12 Chatham Square Tenants

By Albert Countryman Jr.

October 2, 2008-Landlord/Tenant Court was packed Thursday morning in Room 63 of the Camden County Hall of Justice.

Gloucester City Solicitor John Kearney was present, as part of the effort to see who has paid, and who has not, at the Chatham Square Apartments, which had been purchased by the City earlier this year.

\”It was a successful day. We reached resolution on all but one case,\” said Kearney, who patiently listened to the judge\’s long list of rules and regulations concerning payment by 4:30 p.m. in the form of cash, money order, or cashier\’s checks.

Because of poor record keeping by the previous owners of Chatham Square, the City was unable to determine which tenants had paid their rent and security deposits.

Closes to 300 cases of possible eviction were read, and 32 of them dealt with Chatham Square.

\”Twelve cases were dismissed. They had arguably paid, and will continue living there,\” Kearney said.

As a result of the court hearings in another room, the City settled with four tenants.

\”There was a degree of confusion due to the prior management. It was stipulated that four people owed us rent and we put it on a payment schedule, with a significant down payment. We (the City) collected over $5,000 Thursday,\” Kearney said.

Another 15 tenants defaulted, and they will be evicted, he said.

The one complaint that was not resolved had problems concerning hab-itability, Kearney said.

The Gloucester City Democrat Club Endorses Barack Obama for President

Photo and caption by Bill Cleary

The local Democrat Club unveiled a new sign recently endorsing Senator Barack Obama for president and Senator Joe Biden for vice-president. The Gloucester City Democrat Club is located at Broadway and Monmouth Street.

A few weeks ago there were a few comments posted on CNB calling the Democrats in Gloucester City \”racist rednecks\” because there were no Obama for president signs posted on the Club’s headquarters.

At the time the reason given by one local Democrat was that those in charge of Mr. Obama’s campaign are using the monies on other things like costly television commercials.
