The 2008 Lion\’s title campaign started in Pitman Friday night (Sept.12th) as the heavily favored Lion\’s faced off against the Pitman Panthers with a 34 – 0 win. The battle in Pitman i s never easy, but throw in some rain showers and any advantage is gone. Somehow the Lion\’s through recent years have been able to overcome the home field advantage of the Panthers. Like a small child this game is a small step before the run toward the title.

To commemorate the occasion, a bronze plaque with Vince McAneney\’s likeness was unveiled outside the field that now bears his name.

The amazing and energetic 78-year-old is the father of 4 and has 13 grandchildren and an extended family of hundreds of former players who say they are better men today because of Coach Mac.

Gloucester Catholic principal John Colman, a member of the executive committee, said the issue would be further discussed at the organization\’s Oct. 8 meeting.

In the meantime, members of the Realignment Committee are scheduled to reconvene to discuss adjusting the proposal to address concerns raised during yesterday\’s meeting.

The proposal could go to the executive committee for vote Oct. 8, although there appears to be sentiment to table the vote and push to start of the proposed realignment to the 2010-11 school year to allow for further discussion and adjustment.

Shawnee football coach Tim Gushue admits that he lied. Told a fib to his team about the importance of last night\’s opening game with Lenape School District rival Cherokee.

Gushue gave his team the speech before the contest that the opener wasn\’t a must-win game. Even though the seniors had never beaten Cherokee and had lost the previous two games over the last two years by two points, that wasn\’t supposed to matter.

 On September 12, 2008. Age 67. Of Gloucester City. Loving husband of 11 years to the late Antoniette M. Chessman (nee Jawor). Loving and devoted father of Jack A. (Bernadette) Chessman of West Deptford. Loving grandfather of John A. Chessman, III. Dear brother of Diane L. (William) White of Gloucester City. John was born and raised in Gloucester City. He worked as a letter carrier in Gloucester City for over 27 years. John proudly served our country during Vietnam in the U.S. Navy and retired with 23 years of service. John was a proud member of the American Legion Post 72 in Brooklawn, Townsend C. Young V.F.W Post 3620 in Gloucester City, Sportsmen A.C., NRA and the Tin Can Sailors.

Rams blank Devils

Gloucester Catholic\’s Chelsea Duffy registered two goals and June Maloney added a goal and an assist en route to a 6-0 victory against Penns Grove. Caitlin Sweeney and Jacki Wajda split time in net for the shutout.

Gloucester Catholic High School beat Clearview 45-41 today, Saturday playing before a large crowd at home. Rams QB Zach Barlage threw for 302 yards and 4 TDS.

Gloucester City resident George Spingler had 233 receiving yards for the Rams and three TDs. Also for the Rams, Alex Christ had 1 rushing TD, Pat Schuhl had 2 rushing TDs and Jake Yates caught the other TD.

Next game is @ Delsea on Sept 26.

At 11 AM today (Saturday) the City of Gloucester City will officially christen the new schooner, The Northwind/Saoirese Ceallaigh pronounced SEER-Shuh Kail-ay, meaning freedom from strife at the former Coast Guard Base, (Freedom Pier) King and Cumberland Streets and the Delaware River waterfront.

 

The City\’s Shamrock Festival is also being held today.

 

Councilman Nick Marchese was asked how the City government chose the name for the vessel. He explained the idea for it came about during a discussion among the mayor, council members and City Administrator Paul Kain.

 

Marchese said, \”This Irish name using two words, Freedom, the Mayors suggestion for Freedom Pier which is the schooner\’s new home in Gloucester and my suggestion was the name Kelly, which is my mother’s maiden name. I wanted to honor my mother Aileen who died this past winter and all of her sisters who were born and raised in Gloucester City. The Kelly family has been in this city for many years. They are all Irish Catholic with a very strong faith in God and Gloucester City. Anyone who knew and loved them knew they were good Gloucester people. Many of their children still live in Gloucester and surrounding communities who continue to carry on traditions taught by the Kelly sisters.

 

\”I have thanked the Mayor and Council members for this honor. I know the Kelly family, William, Grace, Edna, Alice, Girt, Rosemarie (Sis), Theresa, Aileen, Florence (Nonnie), and Pat would be very proud to have this honor in the naming of this schooner and to be a permanent part of Gloucester City’s history forever\” said Marchese.

Pat Kelly Avis, the only surviving sister was asked to christen the vessel. Pat, who accepted the invitation, is still involved in Gloucester City through Saint Mary\’s Church.

The Gloucester City Shamrock Festival begins at 11 AM and will continue to 7 PM. It is being held along the Delaware River waterfront south on King Street towards the City Marina and will include Proprietor’s Park.

Added to the festivities is a free ride on the Northwind/Saoirese Ceallaigh. The first 100 people who register Saturday will be given a ride on the vessel that day. You can sign up at Freedom Pier.
