Shawnee shocked South Jersey when the Renegades won the Tournament of Champions on Nov. 18 at the College of New Jersey. Shawnee, the South Jersey Group 3 titlist, defeated Oak Knoll, the North 1 Group 1 champ, 3-0.

Oak Knoll, the little engine that could, had derailed powerful Eastern, 3-2, in overtime in a TOC semifinal four days earlier, making headlines throughout the state. The Royals from Summit stopped Eastern\’s 204-game winning streak against New Jersey teams, which spanned nine years.

While the defeat was a crushing blow to Eastern, Shawnee\’s victory was a crowning glory for the players on the field and in lineups to come.

The Greyhounds opened each of the last two years with Absegami and St. Joseph in the first two weeks. Absegami was runner-up in South Jersey Group IV before opening with Pleasantville two years ago and was the defending South Jersey Group IV champion before last year\’s opener. The Wildcats won the state Non-Public II coming into 2006 and 2007.

GLOUCESTER CITY — Lawrence Fluehr believes in this city\’s revitalization plans for its waterfront so much that he has opened an office here for his Philadelphia-based charter cruise line.

Fluehr is now docking his boat, which serves as an office for his business of more than 30 years, on the city\’s Delaware River waterfront. That gives him a presence in South Jersey where most of his pleasure-boating trips originate.

A revitalization effort is aimed at transforming the waterfront into an Irish-themed village with restaurants, shops and offices, in addition to housing along King Street.

A two-time All-American (1999-2000), Matter had tremendous success in EIWA competition. Penn’s only four-time EIWA Champion, he was named EIWA Outstanding Freshman in 1996 and in 2000 was the recipient of the John Fletcher Memorial Trophy as the wrestler who made the greatest contribution to the EIWA Tournament. The 2000 season also saw Matter earn the distinction of being named EIWA Outstanding Wrestler. In 19996, in addition to his EIWA Outstanding Rookie honor, he was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and was named first-team All-Ivy three times (1996, 1997 and 2000). His 128 career wins place him second in program history.

In the 1980\’s, before the internet and blogs, there was no place like Dick Patrick has covered Track and Field for the USA Today for 22 years The USA Today for those interested in the latest track and running news. The national paper\’s coverage of the sport was top notch from the start– featuring the top ten finisher listings for each state for the Boston and New York marathons and the knowledgeable, crisp writing of Dick Patrick. Twenty two years later the state by state listings are a quaint thing of the past, but luckily for track fans Dick Patrick is still a staple at the paper.

The 5-foot-11 middle blocker had 38 kills and 14 total blocks in four matches in the Red Dragon Classic, earning All-Tournament team honors.

In five matches, Burnham has 47 kills, 15 total blocks and 10 digs, along with 67 points. Fellow Moorestown grad Devon Johnston, the 2007 NJAC Rookie of the Year, leads the team with 53 kills.
