GLOUCESTER CITY — About 15 city residents attended an information session Tuesday night at the local library to learn about an $11 million paint job that will occur over their heads.

The Delaware River Port Authority is gearing up to remove layers of paint on a section of the 51-year old Walt Whitman Bridge, most of it lead-based, and to repaint it in its trademark shade of green.

Eller\’s teammate, Army Spc. Jeff Holguin, finished fourth. Both soldiers are members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, based at Fort Benning, Ga.

Eller went into the final round leading by four shots and hit 45 out of 50 targets to win the first shooting gold for Team USA in Beijing.

Eller is a three-time Olympian. He finished 15th in 2000 and 17th in the last summer Olympic Games. He claimed the gold medal at the 2007 Korea World Cup as well as the 2007 World Cup Final. He also took the Silver Medal at the 2008 \”Good Luck Beijing\” International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup. Holguin claimed the silver medal in men\’s double trap at the 2007 Pan-American Games and won the bronze medal at the World Cup USA in May.

 New Jersey’s Kyle Harrigan, 18, and New Mexico’s Jordan McMorris, 15, won their respective age divisions Saturday at the Junior Bassmaster World Championship on New York’s Onondaga Lake. The event was held in conjunction with the final Bassmaster Elite Series event of the season, which was staged on New York’s Oneida Lake, and the pair of teenagers took home $5,000 each in scholarships and a Triton boat package.

Harrigan of Bradley, N.J., claimed the 15 to 18 year-old title with a 16-pound, 1-ounce mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth bass. Harrigan’s pro, Jeremy Starks of Charleston, W.Va., served as Harrigan’s mentor.

Mr. Howarth earned his Bachelors in Education and Masters in Music from Combs College. He was an Educator for 34 years at Gloucester City High School. In addition to his teaching duties, he directed 22 musical productions, served as a football coach, role model and friend to countless students and colleagues during his tenure at the school. In the Gibbsboro Community, he served as a Councilman and Director of Youth Sports, also serving as Assistant Director for the CYO in South Jersey for many years. Mr. Howarth was an accomplished musician and entertainer for over 50 years. His love of golf enriched his life, especially after retirement, when he spent quality time with family and friends.

Bellmawr won its first Tri-County Baseball League championship Monday night, taking the title series 2 games to 1 with a 3-1 victory over Deptford.

Brian Ciconte and Nate Buchter had RBI doubles and Nick Faragam had an RBI single in the decisive fourth inning for Bellmawr, which finished third in the regular season. Tyler Dempsey had five strikeouts and no walks in getting the victory.

Legion baseball

Cherry Hill won the New Jersey American Legion Baseball 14-and-under state championship by defeating Florence 8-3.

The Bellmawr resident constantly put the needs of others before his own. He was as courteous, kind, polite and mild-tempered in his personal life as in his role as a NJ Transit bus driver, a high-stress job that required handling impatient commuters and the demands of the riding public.

Campanell, who died last month at 83, had a penchant for smoking cigars, singing show tunes and frequently flashing an ear-to-ear grin that was infectious.

The tigers were a goodwill gesture from the North Carolina Conservators’ Center, a breeding sanctuary for endangered species.

\”We are building trust with America,\” said Dr. Adel Salman Mousa, the zoo’s director. \”We’re building trust with a society that trusted us to care for these animals.\”

The cubs are just under 2 years old and weigh more than 150 pounds each. The Bengal tiger is an endangered species, with less than 3,000 worldwide.

\”We hope to bring smiles back to the people and the children,\” Mousa said. \”We want to put smiles back on their faces after years of misery. In addition to the enjoyment people will get from watching them, they will present opportunities for students and the public to learn about this and other endangered species.\”

\”This is exemplary of how people in Iraq are taking the lead to improve the circumstances in Iraq,\” said Army Capt. Jason Felix, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), whose unit was in charge of tiger transport following their Aug. 4 arrival at Baghdad International Airport.

Transporting the tigers here from the states cost more than $66,000 and was paid for by the U.S. Embassy.

Concerns have arisen about the safety of the tigers in a combat zone. During the early days of the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the zoo lost many of its animals to injury or starvation, including its tiger, which was shot when it began attacking a U.S. soldier. It was also difficult to maintain the zoo for many years prior to 2003 because of lack of medicine, vaccinations and often food, Mousa said.
