Chuckles

One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below
sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth he was, but he
had on no scuba gear whatsoever.

The diver went below another 20 feet, but the guy joined him a
few minutes later. The diver went below 25 feet, but minutes
later, the same guy joined him. This confused the diver, so he
took out a waterproof chalkboard set, and wrote, \"How the heck
are you able to stay under this deep without equipment?\"

The guy took the board and chalk, erased what the diver had
written, and wrote, \"I\'m drowning, you moron!\"

Bills Opinion: Three Corner Park restored

GLOUCESTER CITY-The dilapidated Three Corner Park at the intersection of Burlington and Middlesex Streets, has recently been brightened up with brand new equipment.

The old playground equipment at the former $100,000 park built in the 1980\’s wasn\’t maintained. Broken down swings, park benches unfit for anyone to sit on, and the rusted sliding boards were unsafe for the kids to use. The park was surrounded by weeds and debris. The run down condition of park was featured on ClearysNotebook in August and September 2006.

It is nice to see the City paid attention to our remarks and fixed the problem. Now it is up to the people in the neighborhood to make sure that vandals don\’t destroy it.

Brooklawn Council Honors Ray Staley For Community Service

By Linda Boker-Angelo

NEWS Correspondent

Brooklawn Council last week approved a proclamation honoring former Councilman Ray Staley for his years of dedicated service to the community.

After serving on Council for six years, Staley decided not to seek re-election last year. He attended his last official meeting in December.

Mayor John Soubasis presented Staley with a plaque memorializing the proclamation.

Staley thanked the governing body for their recognition, adding that he will probably still be on hand to help out.

Council also approved a proclamation honoring former Camden County Freeholder Tom Gurick, who also stepped down from his position at the end of his term last year. Gurick was unavailable to receive his plaque.

In other business, a bingo and raffle license was approved for the American Legion.

Scott Smith of Kei Associates reported on several ongoing Borough projects, while Councilwoman Theresa Branella noted that there was a good community turnout for the Borough’s \”Biggest Loser\” program.

Fireman weighs in on the controversey

Judy,

What a sad and distorted picture you paint of your local firefighters.
For the record I am proud to say I am a career firefighter with the
GCFD and the Vice President of Local 51 of the FMBA . There are
several issues that you are attempting to bring light to that really
need to be clarified.
First yes we do only work 8 days a month. That
works out to be 24 hour shifts every four days. Those three days off
that we have are usually spent working 1 or more part time jobs. I
don\’t claim that the money we make from this job is in any way bad but
it won\’t be making any of us rich anytime soon. I myself work parttime
as a Paramedic and I also teach several classes for various
organizations. This leaves very little time for my wife and three
children. This is the same situation for everyone of my brother
firefighters. So if our family or friends stop by in the evening I
think it is ok. The statement that people are there all night is
COMPLETELY FALSE!
Second your fire department has a block inspection and
smoke detector inspection program that is run in the warmer months. So
again you seem to be mistaken that we are not performing this task.
Third several hours of each shift is dedicated to training. The winter
months usually have us indoors performing MANDATORY updates for fire
and EMS certifications. The warmer months find us at the fire academy
and performing MANDATORY training evolutions in fire suppression,
rescue, and Haz Mat.
As to the comments made by Mark the boy under the car was in fact saved only
by the GCFD not Camden. That rescue that I was personally on was one
of the best operations I have ever been involved in. The FACT is that
boy was extricated in under 10 minutes from the time of dispatch.
Camden arrived after that boy was removed and being transported. They
never touched that boy! The mutual aid putting the fires out is
another mistake Mark made. EVERY town in ANY county works with
mutual aid and TOGETHER WE put the fire out. GCFD has a mutal aid
agrement with several area fire departments. They may come to our aid
and we often go to their aid. We happen to be one of three departments
in Camden County to operate a fully equiped Haz Mat unit and Specialized
Rescue unit. Not to mention there is no way GCFD would be able to
handle any serious fire without mutual aid we simply do not have the
manpower to do all that is required.
So let me close by asking a
question to you and Mark. Is your memory so short that you don\’t remember 7/04/02 and
the three firefighters that died trying to save three little girls? Is
your view of our station only of the bench that is out front or can you
also see that statue remembering that horrible day?
In closing allow me to invite both of you to visit the firehouse and work a 24 hour shift with
us. I bet we can change your opinion!!!
Signed Steve

Commissioners Meeting

Mount Ephraim Commissioners Make Personnel Appointments for 2007

By Linda Boker-Angelo

NEWS Correspondent

The Mount Ephraim Board of Commissioners last week approved several contracts and personnel appointments for the coming year.

George Coleman, who has served the Borough in the past, will continue as sewer operator, while Gary Koehler will remain water supply system operator. Joseph Ciano, Jr. was re-appointed to the post of Public Works Manager.

The contract for gasoline and diesel fuel for Borough vehicles was awarded to Pedroni Fuel Company. The contract for auto parts went to NAPA Auto Parts.

Commissioner Suzanne Gaglianone reported that the Borough \”came into the 21st century\” recently with the installation of a new computer system. Gaglianone said the new software would make record keeping and auditing in the Borough offices easier and more efficient.

Police Chief Edward Dobleman announced that the police department would be taking over the DARE program in the Borough schools. He said that monies received as the result of the Borough department’s participation in a large bust will help to get the program up and running. In the past, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department has overseen DARE in Borough Schools.

The commissioners will meet again at

8 p.m.

on Thursday, February 1 in the Borough Hall, 131 South Black Horse Pike
