KEAN REPEATS AS 2008 NJAC CHAMPIONSHIP BEATING TCNJ 70-61 ; COUGARS EARN NCAA AUTOMATIC BID

Media Release

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team hosted the Cougars of Kean University in the championship game of the 2008 New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament in Packer Hall on Friday evening before a crowd of a thousand. Kean would repeat as the league’s champions, earning the program’s 12th title since winning the league’s first championship in 1982-1983. Kean would improve to 25-3 on the year, while snapping TCNJ’s eight-game win streak as the Lions drop to 21-6. Kean would take a 2-1 lead in the season match-ups of the two squads. Kean, ranked 13th in the latest Division III poll, tallied their third straight victory on Friday as they posted the road win.

The Cougars were led on the night by five different players that finished in double-digits, while a pair of players added double-doubles in the contest. Pacing Kean was junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) as she tallied 17 points and senior center Chari’ Cooper (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) added 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Kean would take a commanding 36-19 halftime lead into the locker room as sophomore guard Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain West) contributed 10 points and Cooper added 11 first half rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Kean would hold a 32-23 edge on the board and despite shooting only 31.0% from the floor in the first stanza (13-42). Jackman would hit twice from three-point range and help Kean have a 17 point lead twice in the first half after TCNJ took the early lead in the first six minutes of play.

Kean would build a 20 point lead to open the second half, but TCNJ would not go away and pulled within eight points, down 53-45 at 9:55. Kean answered right back and quickly built a 15-point lead up 60-45 with 7:31 left to play. TCNJ was back within eight points, down 63-55 at 2:02 before the game ended with a 70-61 Kean victory.

Cooper added 18 rebounds on the night and currently ranks third all-time in NCAA Division III women’s history as she now has 1,471 rebounds.

Junior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, NJ/Malcolm X Shabazz) would move within one of setting Kean’s career assist mark as she now has 465, just off the school mark. Jackson added 10 points and four steals in the game.

TCNJ’s junior center, Hillary Klimowicz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), the 2007-2008 NJAC Player of the Year, finished the night with a career-high 28 points, while finishing 17 rebounds for her 20th double-double of the season. The 28 points betters her previous high of 24 points, set just 10 days ago.

Senior Sara Best (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) also connected a double digit scoring performance as she netted 11 points and now 718 career points. TCNJ’s freshman Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), the 2007-2008 NJAC Rookie of the Year, added eight points with 10 rebounds and handed out four assists.
TCNJ must now wait until the NCAA Division III tournament announcement on March 3 and hope for an at-large pool \”C\” bid.

TCNJ’S ALERCIO RESIGNS TO SERVE AS FIRST HEAD FOOTBALL AT CASTLETON STATE

Media Release

Castleton, VT (2/28/08) – Rich Alercio, photo, (Hamilton, NJ), assistant football coach at The College of New Jersey was introduced on Thursday as the first head football coach at Castleton State College (Castleton, VT) at a press conference. Alercio has accepted a position as the head coach for the Spartans and will lead the team when it officially commences varsity competition in 2009.

At the press conference, Castleton State College Associate Dean of Athletics and Recreation, Deanna Tyson, announced the hiring of Rich Alercio as Castleton’s inaugural head football coach. The college received more than 150 applications for the position.

Tyson said, \”The five candidates we interviewed on campus were all well qualified to coach at Castleton, but Rich Alercio is the best fit for our athletic program. He is going to be a tremendous role model for our male athletes – on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.\”

At Castleton Alercio will be charged with starting the football program from the ground up, with the team’s first game slated for the 2009 season. His official start date will be July 1, 2008, but he will be involved in the hiring of a full-time assistant coach, along with the planning of the new Spartan Stadium, home of Castleton football.

Along with 21 years of coaching experience, Alercio brings his wife and three sons to the Castleton community. \”I felt this is a place where my family and the football family can be together,\” he said.

With the addition of football, Castleton will offer 20 varsity sports. The college is a member of NCAA Division III and does not offer athletic scholarships.

Castleton competes in the North Atlantic Conference, which recently added football as a conference sport. Castleton becomes the seventh member to sponsor football in the NAC, along with Becker College, Gallaudet University, Husson College, SUNY Maritime College, Mount Ida College, and Norwich University.

John Castaldo, Director of Athletics and Recreation at TCNJ said, \”Rich has been a dedicated staff member and the athletic department wishes him well in his new endeavor.\” Castaldo added, \”Rich has been a valuable role model for our department and he will surely be missed. We wish Rich all the best in his new position.\”

Alercio has been with the Lions as the program’s first and only full-time assistant for the past 15 years. He has served as the Lions’ offensive line coach, and has also doubled as one of TCNJ’s chief recruiters, while also coordinating the offensive game plan and preparation.

Alercio had a fine athletic career at Ursinus College where he served as team captain and earned the Big Bear Award for team leadership as a starting center on the football team. A graduate of Toms River North High School, Alercio returned to his alma mater in 1988 serving as an assistant football coach. While there he was in charge of the varsity squad’s defensive line while also heading up the sophomore football team.

Alercio graduated from Ursinus in 1987 with a BA in economics, and from there he went on to work as an economics teacher, defensive coordinator, and head lacrosse coach at Admiral Farragut Academy. He later served as an assistant football coach and director of intramurals at West Chester University from 1989 to 1991. Before arriving at TCNJ, he served as the assistant coach in charge of the offensive line and the long snappers at East Stroudsburg from 1991 to 1992.

Alercio and his wife, Kim, reside in Hamilton, NJ, with their ten-year old son, Jake, seven-year old son, Shane, and five-year old son, Trey. Alercio is a full-time athletic department staff member whose other duties at TCNJ have also included assisting with athletic development.
