He was concerned that the men in his unit weren\’t getting enough mail from home. Joe Artavia\’s letter home to his sister, Linda Patterson, asking her to find a city to adopt his unit made a huge difference to Hutchinson and his comrades, Hutchinson said. \”The adoption of our company by the city of San Mateo (Calif.) and your personal dedication to our unit is a matter of great pride to me as well as to many of my brothers-in-arms,\” Hutchinson wrote in a recent letter to Patterson. Though Artavia was killed March 24, 1968, he did learn that his request had been fulfilled. After a March 17 American Forces Press Service story highlighted both the city and Patterson\’s 40-plus years of troop support, others are following Hutchinson\’s lead and are contacting Patterson. Though she is hearing from veterans, she\’s also hearing from current servicemembers regarding her organization, \”America Supporting Americans,\” which works to have communities across the country adopt military units. \”We are hearing (of) a lot of units registering with (America Supporting Americans). Even Navy Seabees have contacted us,\” Patterson said. \”Hopefully some cities will start trickling in soon.\” Patterson also said she\’s excited about other opportunities to share the history of San Mateo\’s relationship with Company A, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Currently, a display at the San Mateo Public Library conveys the story. \”There is talk about circulating a moving wall of this history across the country hopefully to inspire others to join (America Supporting Americans\’) Adopt a Unit program,\” she said. In addition, Patterson said she hopes to take a small contingent of representatives from her organization to visit adopted units in Iraq. The trip would be similar to the then-unprecedented trip she made to Vietnam nearly four decades ago. America Supporting Americans is also a supporter of America Supports You, a Defense Department program connecting citizens and companies with servicemembers and their families serving at home and abroad.

Harris Browning Ross headlines the multimedia section of the site. \”The Father of Long Distance Running in America\” competed in the Olympics in 1948 and 1952, and popularized running in his native Woodbury.

Ross died in 1998, but the videos on Heath\’s Web site help to immortalize the local runner. They could also help to bring new interest in the sport.

The Brooklawn Board of Education held a public hearing and then approved the district\’s 2008-2009 budget of $5,395, 586 at the regular meeting of the Board on March 20.

There will be no tax increase in the Brooklawn School District. Nor will there be any reduction in services. The school district plans to continue to provide services not only for families who have children who attend the school district, but for the entire community as well.

The Shop Rite of Brooklawn Center and the Flowers Library and Media Center will be open evenings and some weekends. Programs will be planned for residents of all ages.

The Board remains committed to continuing the pursuit of nontraditional sources of revenue in the coming year, including the pursuit of discretionary grant funding and continued participations in the New Jersey Inter-district Public School Choice Program.

Highlights of the proposed budget include increased funding for technology, employment of a part-time teacher of Spanish, increased counseling and early childhood education services, and repairs and updates to the physical plant.

In addition, the Board of Education and the Brooklawn Borough Council have agreed to develop a local interagency shared services agreement. Board President Bruce Darrow and Mayor John Soubasis met several times to discuss this agreement, which will result in the school district and borough sharing some services and lead to reduced costs for both the school district and borough.

Board of Education President Bruce Darrow said, \”The entire Board should be commended for their hard work in putting together the 2008-2009 budget. The Board would actually have liked to decrease taxes; however, because the district tax levy is already at the minimum permitted by state law, we were not allowed to do so. Our students remain high achieving, and the school district cost per pupil is among the lowest in the state.

In the past several years, we have built a library, classrooms, and a gym, added staff and programs, installed a new heating system and windows, made significant improvements in technology, and made numerous other improvements to educational programs and the physical plant—all without a tax increase. The Board remains committed to working with the entire community, including Mayor and Council, to find innovative ways to continue the success of the school district for the benefit of not only the students but all the residents of Brooklawn.\”

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – Erin Brockovich’s passion for championing the underdog and the environment were front and center Tuesday night when she packed the Stockton Performing Arts Center.

Brockovich, the guest speaker as part of Stockton’s lecture series, was the subject of the 2000 movie \”Erin Brockovich,\” which chronicled her dogged pursuit of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

She said the movie will stand the test of time, and that even 100 years from now when someone sits down to watch it, they will still get it. They will understand the message that determination and getting involved allows each of us to help create change.

People came as far as Fairmount for the Party For Peace. It is very encouraging for a 6-month-old fledgling radio station. Martini Lounge brought back the Pop Standards the Philadelphia radio landscape had been lacking.

\”This station is a godsend,\” said Mike Bowe, host of Martini Lounge\’s Happy Hour. \”It\’s not just for older people. Young people have been listening. The music is nothing like what\’s out there. There is something different about this music.\”

Both Craig and Bowe have been part of the Philly radio scene for more than 30 years. Both were last heard on WPEN 950 AM until that station changed formats a few years ago.

\”I feel a little like David taking on Goliath,\” said Bowe. \”But it\’s a fun time. I like coming to work in Manayunk.\”

WASHINGTON, March 26, 2008 – U.S. 5th Fleet officials today expressed regret for the death of an Egyptian citizen who died the night of March 24, an apparent result of warning shots fired at a small boat approaching a ship chartered by the U.S. Navy. \”We express our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased,\” Vice Adm. Kevin J. Cosgriff, 5th Fleet commander. \”We are greatly saddened by events that apparently resulted in this accidental death. This situation is tragic, and we will do our utmost to help take care of the family of the deceased.\” The U.S. Navy\’s 5th Fleet Command continues to work cooperatively with Egyptian authorities, including the Suez Canal Authority, through the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, officials said. A full investigation into the incident is under way. \”We will work through the investigation very thoroughly, coordinating with authorities and the embassy, to get a full account of what happened,\” Cosgriff said. An embarked U.S. security team on board the Navy\’s Military Sealift Command-chartered ship Global Patriot fired warning shots at a small boat approaching the ship as it was preparing to transit the Suez Canal. Allentown, PA… The College of New Jersey softball team collected a doubleheader sweep at Muhlenberg College on Wednesday winning the opening game 2-1 in eight innings and then claimed the nightcap 12-1 in five innings.

The pair of wins put the Lions at 10-6 on the season, while the Mules fell to 3-11.

TCNJ will be right back on the field on Thursday heading to Moravian College for another non-conference doubleheader.

TCNJ 2, Muhlenberg 1 (8 innings)
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside) picked up her sixth win of the season tossing a complete game allowing only an unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts.

The Lions plated a pair of unearned runs in the game with sophomore Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) crossing the plate in the top of the first and freshman Kathy Sikora (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) in the top of the eighth with the winning run.

TCNJ 12, Muhlenberg 1 (5 innings)
The Lions once again allowed only one run, but this time received plenty of offensive support thanks mostly to a nine-run third inning.

Senior Christina Lizzi (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) had the big hit in the inning bringing home three runs with a base-clearing double. Sikora also provided a spark plating a pair of runs with a base hit.

Lizzi finished the game going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Sikora was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Freshman Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) earned the win on the mound for the Lions yielding an unearned run on four hits. She also struck out six for her second win of the season. Adding to TCNJ’s offense were Rachel Greeby (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) and Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) as each player picked up two hits.

\”Pittsburgh is just a bigger version of the town I grew up in, Gloucester City, New Jersey,\” Berenato said. \”And the people here share the same values, the blue-collar work ethic, the loyalty, the pride in who they are and where they are from, that I grew up with. So this has felt like home from the first day I moved here.\”

Berenato\’s energy and enthusiasm have been infectious, and she has been called a miracle worker because she has been able to turn the Panthers from one of the nation\’s worst women\’s programs to one that is knocking on the door to becoming one of the nation\’s elite.

Thus if winning — this is the third consecutive season the Panthers have won 20 or more games, the first time they\’ve ever accomplished that feat — was the only criteria to judge a coach, Berenato would have to be considered an overwhelming success.

It is for that reason that Berenato has been named the 2008 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the year. This is the second consecutive season she has won the award, and like last year, much of it has to do with the fact that she has led the Panthers to the NCAA tournament and taken them to heights they had never achieved.
