Letters: Use Gloucester Catholic for the New Middle School

With Gloucester Catholic deserting blue-collar Gloucester City for the \”greener grass\” of Mullica Hill, everyone is now worried about the empty building left behind… and rightfully so.

Since the proposed middle school will never be built, why not use Gloucester Catholic\’s building for that purpose? I am sure there is plenty of room.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia closed, and merged, many Catholic schools in the mid-1990s. A lot of those buildings are now being used by the Board of Education.

Why can\’t the same thing be done here? It is better than having a huge empty building sitting there waiting to be vandalized!

Speaking of the wide open spaces where 68 homes and two businesses once stood (thanks a lot, State of New Jersey), why can\’t some stores be put there?

Not everyone drives and can go running to the malls whenever they need something. A mini-mall of some sort would create jobs.

Barring that, how about some picnic tables? Or maybe some playground equipment?

Sure would be better than what is there now.

TIPS AND SNIPPETS FOR Tuesday (July 15th) by Bill

Regarding the discussion on CNB www.clearysnotebook.com about the Gloucester City School District not hiring a local resident for the position of high school English teacher. Although not specifically mentioned by name the person who is at the center of the discussion is David Knecht, a graduate of Gloucester City High School, Class of 2004. Mr. Knecht received his teaching degree from The College of New Jersey.

Knecht said on Tuesday (July 15, 2008) that he submitted an application for the teaching position at Gloucester High in late May or early June. \”School was still in session\”, he said. \”I also applied for positions at several other schools. Such as Lenape and Seneca.

\”Sometime later I was told by individuals in the know that the City Board of Education had already hired someone for the job at the high school.

\”Shortly after I heard the position was filled in Gloucester City I received a call from the Seneca School District to come in for an interview about a teaching position. Following the interview I was hired.

\”On July 7, Jack Don, Gloucester City High School principal contacted me to come in for an interview. Since I already signed a contract with Seneca School Board I told him I was no longer interested.

\”My main concerns were that the administrators thoroughly advertised the district openings and interviewed enough candidates to feel confident that they hired the best teachers for the students of Gloucester City.\”

City School Superintendent Paul Spaventa was contacted for his response to the comments about the teaching positions posted on ClearysNotebook. \”I don’t respond to blog comments. And I cannot under the law (Privacy Act) respond to issues regarding personnel.\”

Gloucester City: Columbia Student Returns Home

By Albert Countryman Jr.

Maria Zuluaga of Colombia said goodbye to her friends, host family and members of the Gloucester City Rotary Club during a party June 14.

She had lived the past 10 months at the home of Jack and Linda Dilks as part of the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program.

\”I have enjoyed my stay. Things are a little different compared to my country. It has been a great experience. I appreciate the kindness of the Dilks\’ family,\” Maria said.

She has one more year of high school in Colombia, and hopes to attend a major university – where she wants to major in veterinary medicine.

During her stay Maria became friends of Moegi Hatte of Japan, who was staying with the Finn family in Collingswood; and Yunn Lin Wong of Brooklawn, who was born in Malaysia.

\”It\’s been an awesome year for me,\” said Moegi, who was going to return to Japan on July 9. The United States \”is very different than Japan. I enjoyed learning English.\”

Moegi attended Collingswood High School, and was introduced to many different cultures.

\”It is mostly Japanese that live in Japan,\” she said.

\”Maria was one of my best friends at Gloucester High,\” Yunn Lin said. \”Being here is absolutely different. I miss Malaysia.\”

She hopes to visit in the summer of 2009.

It is hard to say goodbye, but these three international students will still stay in touch with each other via email.

Meanwhile, they were all thankful to become friends.

Letters: True Knowledge Is Power

In a recent Courier-Post \”Rabble Rouser\” article, a local Camden County resident stated that \”people need to quit listening to the hard-core conservative blowhards in the media\” and went on to list Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and even Bill O\’Reilly. He also advised to listen to real news instead. Real news as reported on ABC, NBC, CBS and cable TV\’s MSNBC and CNN?

With their liberal slant, that\’s the real news?

There is a reason why conservative talk radio and Fox News Channel is more listened to and watched than the \”real news.\” People want to listen and watch more fact-based, intelligent and thought-provoking discourse, rather than hateful and destructive bile such as MSNBC\’s Keith Olbermann, speaking of blowhards in the media.

When the \”Fairness Doctrine\” was struck down in 1987 during the Reagan administration, it opened the door for the likes of Rush Limbaugh, the highest rated and most listened to talk-show host, who recently inked a new deal with Clear Channel Communications on an 8-year, $400 million dollar contract. His show, approaching its 20th year nationally broadcast must be highly rated and well regarded by his bosses as it brings in millions of listeners per day and must be very profitable for advertisers.

Bill O\’Reilly\’s \”The O\’Reilly Factor\” has been number one on cable for 8 straight years on Fox News Channel, with no signs of slowing down as the most-watched program on cable news. As for Sean Hannity (radio and Fox News Channel\’s \”Hannity and Colmes\”), Glenn Beck (radio and TV), Laura Ingraham and Bill Bennett, they are all enjoying varying degrees of great success.

Liberals tried and failed with \”Air America\” and its hosts Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz and Al Franken. What became of Air America? Since it has very few listeners and even less ad revenue it is bankrupt.

Conservative talk radio is such a smashing success that liberals and Democrats in Congress are trying to re-institute the \”Fairness Doctrine.\” How about a fairness doctrine for network news, newspapers and even bookstores?

We conservatives and independently minded individuals have to be optimistic as liberals and Democrats would vanquished if more people spent a little more time in their daily routines listening and watching these fine, informational programs.

The Courier-Post should begin again to print the local radio schedule as it once did, as a service to its customers, many of whom crave another point of view in these very consequential times.

Knowledge is power and the more avenues created to spread knowledge of our economy, government and our nation\’s history will be welcome to all.

Bill\’s Point of View: Litter Bugs A Real Problem in the area around Cold Springs School

GLOUCESTER CITY-(Saturday, July 12, 2008) Cold Spring Drive has become a convenient dumping site for litter bugs. The trash shown above was laying in the street and school parking lot for the past two days. Besides empty beer bottles, water bottles, pizza boxes, cardboard beer boxes etc. there was also a bag of stinky crab shells.

The trash shown in the photos has been picked up and removed. However, the crab shells in the green trash bag are still there.

Trash left by litter bugs is an ongoing problem in this area. Rubbish, garbage and debris can be found not only in the school parking lot and school playground but also in the fields across from the school that surround the high tension wires.

Some of the biggest offenders are those who ride the ATV’s in the fields. After they leave you will always find signs of rubbish scattered about. The same goes with the spectators who come to watch games at the nearby high school. You can always find trash in the area of the fields where they had parked their cars. They could care less about what they leave behind.

And then there are the building contractors and everyday slobs who use the same fields as a convenient spot to dumb trash, yard debris, and construction waste. Plus the area is used by vagrants and teenagers as a party spot. It is not unusual to find empty drug bags and other drug paraphernalia, along with whiskey bottles, and beer cans in certain locations along the trails.

State taxpayers spent $30 million plus to build the Cold Spring School a decade ago. It saddens me to see the school grounds being used as a trash dump. Likewise with the fields across from the school. If this is any example of how the next generation is going to treat the environment the world is in trouble.

If you see trash piles such as shown above call the City Highway Department or stop and pick it up yourself. And call the police if you see someone dumping the trash.

To the offenders; we don\’t appreciate you using our community as a dump. Show Gloucester City the respect that it deserves.

Letters: He Don\’t Bite!

Bill,

Again I write to you and tell you that I enjoy your column. Keep on writing, Bill, many in the town agree with your views.

I am also writing to you about a concern of mine.

Many residents may not know there are a large and I can not stress a large number of Pit Bulls in Gloucester City. This is evident on Broadway as the town\’s new residents walk these \”killing machines\” up the street sometimes with chains around their collar.

My point is this.

Have these dog owners carry a $1 million home owners policy. Those who rent, have the landlord carry the policy and up the rent accordingly. You and I have heard many a times, \”he don\’t bite\”, but how often have you seen on the news one gets out and seriously harms an individual.

If need be ask the local letter carriers to supply addresses where these \”killing machines\” reside.

This is a chance for the City to be Pro Active before a tragedy strikes.

I am not looking to make somebody rich with a lawsuit, I just want to make certain that the finances are there to provide medical help to possibly a innocent now disfigured child.

Thanks for your ear,

A friend
