Bellmawr School District Anticipates $871,000 Shortfall

By Chris Concannon

NEWS Correspondent

A handful of residents filled the Bell Oaks Media Centre March 4 as part of a Budget Advisory Committee implemented by Bellmawr Superintendent Annette Castiglione.

She said that while the Board of Education currently only has a preliminary budget, members were waiting to see how Governor Corzine’s budget announcement would affect their final numbers.

Ms. Castiglione added once they receive that information, a public hearing will be held, making the information available to the public, adding a copy of the new budget will appear both in print, as well as on the District website, www.bellmawrschools.org.

Interim Board Secretary N. John Amato said the BOE was using the same numbers as last year, adding that while they are expecting 20 percent more in this year’s budget, they did also expect a shortfall of approximately $871,000.

Mt. Ephraim: Large Turnout at School Board Meeting

By Leigh Anne

Hockenberry Hubbs

NEWS Correspondent

There was a larger than average turnout for the Mount Ephraim Board of Education meeting March 9, the eve of Governor Corzine\’s budget address.

Superintendent Joseph Rafferty and Board Secretary Melissa Raywood presented a general overview of the district\’s budget, but stated that the exact figures will not be known until after the budget address.

Raywood said Mount Ephraim has been rated an efficient school district, and continues to maximize their dollars spent through sharing services with other communities such as using Bellmawr\’s Public Works for the development of the Mary Bray playground.

Another example of when a shared service saves the district money is their involvement in School Pool for Excess Liability Limits (SPELLJIF), an excess liability joint insurance program with many New Jersey districts that has caused Mount Ephraim\’s premiums to drop over the past five years.

Gloucester City School Board & Teachers Union to Discuss Sick Bank Program

By Linda Boker-Angelo

NEWS Correspondent

Marge Thomas of the Gloucester City Education Association (GCEA) asked the Board of Education to set up a meeting concerning the \”sick bank\” program.

During last week’s meet-ing, Mrs. Thomas, a staff member at Gloucester High and a member of the executive committee of the GCEA, asked the School Board when its designated committee would be meeting with the GCEA’s \”sick bank\” committee to discuss an agreement on this issue.

A sick bank traditionally is designed to aid employees who have used all of their accrued sick, personal and vacation time due to an injury or illness of their own, or due to the health issue of a family member.

Thomas said it was agreed upon at the signing of the last contract that both sides would work to approve a mutually acceptable sick bank agreement, which, to this point, has not been discussed.

Both Superintendent Paul Spaventa and Board Committee Head Edward Hubbs said they have been in touch with members of the GCEA, and a meeting to discuss the issue will be scheduled.
