DALEY, Dorothy On April 12, 2009, Easter Sunday, Dorothy went home to the Lord. Age 86. Of Maple Shade. Survived by her cousins and devoted caregivers of the Palace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Welcome Signs Need some TLC

I received a TIP/complaint the other day about the conditions of some of the Gloucester City Welcome Signs that greet visitors to our City.

The individual wrote, \”I was wondering if you could post a message about the GC Welcome Planters around our city. It would be nice if they were cleaned up. $\"P1040848\"$ The one near the border of Brooklawn and Gloucester City on Broadway (above) is overgrown with weeds. The sign near the high school on Market Street (left) is also over run with weeds. The one off of Rt 42 at Market Street still has dried out mums in it from last November. These signs are the first thing people see entering our community/neighborhoods and it would be nice to set a great first impression\”.

The seven welcome signs were put into place in 2007 by the contractor hired to do the job, Astro Outdoor Advertising of Glassboro. The cost for each was $1,759 for a total of $12,313. The arrangement at the time called for the signs being paid for by various local businesses and maintained by local organizations. There was no tax dollars used to purchase them.

I would have to agree with the Tipster; some of the flower beds under the signs are in need of some TLC (tender loving care). Hopefully now that this has been pointed out the organizations responsible for maintaining them will take a day to weed and plant some flowers. If someone would let me know when the new plants are in the ground I will go back and take a picture to show everyone how nice they look.

FREE LUNCH

BELLMAWR NJ-I found an interesting book called Free Lunch http://www.amazon.com/Free-Lunch-Wealthiest-Themselves-Government/dp/1591841917

$\"012208_0126_GloucesterC1\"$ Bass Pro Shops is mentioned in the book as one of the companies that take advantage of towns eager for a big store to move in– but often doesn’t pay for land or pay property taxs etc.

I thought it was interesting because Bass Pro Shops is the anchor mentioned in the Bellmawr dump project, although I don’t think they have signed any paperwork last I heard.

After enduring a year of dump trucks and water trucks in town, most residents will probably glad to see anything get built on the big pile of soil that is the Bellmawr dump/ecological center. But hopefully the people that run the town (Bellmawr) are smart enough not to get fleeced.

The developers of stores like Bass Pro or Walmart hold all the cards and are often a drain on the town.
When they are built, the stores use a lot of resources (traffic, police) etc.

I passed a big complex in Moorestown yesterday just made of athletic fields and trails for biking and walking. To me that would be a better use of the land for the quality of life of the residents since there is so little open space.

At least worth thinking about.

Thousands Honor Doolittle Raiders at the 67th Reunion

WASHINGTON, April 20, 2009 – Thousands of people, young and old, gathered to honor five of the nine surviving Doolittle Raiders at the 67th Reunion in Columbia, S.C., April 16-18.

On April 18, 1942, the Doolittle Raiders, led by then-Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle, became the first to bombard Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

\”Early on, everybody thought leaving the flight deck of the carrier was the biggest challenge of the trip,\” retired Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole, Doolittle\’s co-pilot, said. \”As it turned out, it was the easiest thing, and I had a special advantage because I was sitting next to the best pilot in the world. I admire all of the guys; I especially admire the man I was sitting next to, a fine man and a great pilot.\”
