West Virginia Drivers Hit Most Deer, State Farm Says

Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) — West Virginia drivers lead the U.S. in collisions with deer for the third straight year as a larger population of the animals meets increasing traffic in once-rural areas, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. said.

One in every 39 drivers in West Virginia is likely to hit a deer in the next 12 months, State Farm said today. The probability was 1 in 45 in last year’s study. Michigan ranked second, with odds of 1 in 78, according to State Farm claims data and motor vehicle registration counts from the Federal Highway Administration.

\”We see thousands of dollars worth of damage,\” said Spyro Nicoloudakis, co-owner of A-1 Body Shop in Charleston, West Virginia. \”Everybody, one time or another, has had an experience with hitting a deer.\”

Crashes reach their peak from October through December — deer mating season — and cause more than $1 billion in vehicle damage annually, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said in a separate study.

With the hunting and trapping seasons just around the corner, the Game Commission now is sharing that information – through its website – with those who enjoy Penn’s Woods.

To view these field forecasts offered by Game Commission officers, go to the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), and click on the \”Field Officer Forecasts,\” select the region of interest in the map, and then choose the WCO district of interest from the map. Pet Tips: Barking: How and When to Make it Stop

$\"Tasha\"$ Some folks think that barking dogs are a nuisance. Others ignore the noise to the dismay of their neighbors. But however you feel about Mans’ Best Friend’s verbal greetings there are a few simple ways to make those howling noises stop on cue!

First and foremost dogs should not be left alone in a yard to bark at everyone and everything! There are noise ordinances out there and they cover everything from singing Josh Grobin at 6 AM, to shouting out in the ‘hood after a visit to a friendly tavern, to the aforementioned endless barking of your dog. But how do you know when to make the dog stop howling? My suggestion is to make him stop before the cops come knocking at your door!
