No. 20 Field Hockey Cruises to 4-2 Win Over W&J; Ducks Complete Second-Straight Perfect Conference Ledger
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 28, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team completed an undefeated conference regular season for the second time in as many years with a 4-2 win over Empire 8 foe Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Sophomore Mallory Swanson (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored twice and freshman Marguerite Chavez (Ocean Port, N.J.) tallied a goal and an assist as the No. 20 Ducks improved to 14-3 on the season (6-0 Empire 8) with the victory.
Stevens made the most of their first-half chances scoring three times on 11 shots. Chavez got things started at the 4:36 mark with an unassisted tally. The rookie carried the ball down the right seam and into the circle before blasting a shot past W&J keeper Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio) from 12 yards out. It was her eighth goal of the season.
Swanson then gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead when she was able to put in her own rebound. The sophomore controlled the ball in front, took a shot that was blocked, corralled the rebound and put it home.
