BELLMAWR-A host of family, friends, administrators, students and teachers, past and present, gathered at Bell Oaks School October 1 to witness the unveiling of the Betty Sheppard Memorial Park, honoring the late, long-standing member of the Bellmawr Board of Education (BOE).

Current BOE President Jody Mangus, said that Sheppard, at the time of her passing, was the 11th longest-serving BOE member in the state of New Jersey.

Superintendent Annette Castiglione opened the evening’s program by introducing former Guidance Counselor Robert Scharlach as Master of Ceremonies, who is arguably Bell Oaks’ biggest fan.

Following the Bell Oaks Chorale’s rendition of our National Anthem, Scharlach offered his welcoming remarks and then introduced Ms. Mangus.

She touched on Sheppard’s tenure in the Bellmawr school system. Sheppard was very passionate about Special Education, implementing numerous initiatives for the developmentally disabled.

Current State Senator Jim Beach (D-4) remembered Betty Sheppard as a very strong-willed person.
