Ok, what’s going on is that Beth and Tom Ronketty have decorated their home with over 100,000 lights for the holidays. They go \”overboard\” every year with their decorations in order to bring attention to a \”cause\”. Every year they are selected to be featured on CBS news for their \”decorations\” and for the \”cause they support. They did this last year and chose the Yellow Ribbon Club as recipients for this. We had a nice show of support last year and the Ronketty’s raised a few hundred dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Club.

This year they want to do it again and they decorated their home with all of those lights. We also have had some changes in the Yellow Ribbon Club recently. We no longer have the shipping assistance that we have had for 4 years and are doing all of the packing and shipping from the Drummonds home. (you can see several recent thank you notes from the troops at www.yellowribbonclub.org). The cost for shipping is now 100% on the club and they could use some help. CBS is coming out this Tuesday and will broadcast live from their home at the above address between 4pm and 6pm. The first broadcast will be exactly at 4pm. With this, CBS will also acknowledge the cause of the effort which is raising donations for the Yellow Ribbon Club to ship goodies to the troops. IF you are able to stop by and hang out a little, please do at the above address as we need patriotic eye candy to get the publics attention. Please bring flags, ribbons and anything patriotic…like motorcycles.

CBS is also doing their own thing with Toys for Tots and have asked us to invite those who come, to bring an unwrapped toy for their drive. This is a win-win night. Help kids and help support the troops.

The Ronketty’s will have light refreshments. There will be a magician so bring the kids.

JACOB GEORGE CHEW, JR.

A Farewell Service will be held for Jacob George Chew, Jr., 86, of Bellmawr, who died November 13, 2009.

A great day for Jake was spent at Gloucester Park meeting friends, old and new. Jake always brought extra chairs for his friends. Lunch would be at Ponzios, followed by a nap. Afternoons would include a visit to the Red Bank Battlefield to meet more friends. A return to Ponzios for dinner would finish Jake’s day.

Jake was born in Barnsboro and graduated from Woodbury High. He was a member of America’s greatest generation, serving in the US Army in World War II. He landed in Normandy shortly after D-day. He fought throughout Europe including the Battle of the Bulge though he rarely mentioned it. Jake was a member of the Laborer’s Union Local #172 of Bordentown.

Jake’s easy-going, friendly manner will be with us forever.

Husband of the late Pearl and father of Sandra Shisler (Walter) and sister-in-law of Mary Chew. Survived by many nieces and nephews, his friends at the park and his extended family at Manor Care.

Interment was in Woodbury Memorial Park.

THOMAS G. JEFFERS

Funeral Services were held for Thomas G. Jeffers, 60, of Bellmawr, who passed away on November 13, 2009.

\”Why not me?\”…this is how Tom began his greatest testimony. No anger, no fear, no hesitation. Toms’ faith proved strong as he remained confident in Gods’ word, never wavering from his trust in salvation. Psalm 15.

Tom was a former coach for M.E.P.R.I. and Bellmawr Purple Eagles football teams and worked diligently for Pathmark for more than 40 years.

Loving son of Theodore and Marie Jeffers. Beloved husband of Susan F., joyfully married for 41 years. Devoted father of Thomas, Jr. (Corry), Nicole Doucet (Mark) and Jason (Francie). Dear brother of Joanne Elenbark (George), Theodore (Dawn), and John (Lynn). Loving grandfather of Brendan McGlinchey, Thomas III, Kayla, Tanner, Karie, Andrew, Joey, Serina, Evan, Autumn and Liberty. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He had a fatherly love for his nephew Alton C. Amato & cousin Gene Petruzzi. By his side for more than 55 years has been his, incredibly loyal, best friend Tom Dworacek.

JAMES T. KERRIGAN

A Funeral Mass was held at Most Holy Redeemer Church, Westville, for James T. Kerrigan, 86, of Deptford, who died November 13, 2009.

Jim grew up in the shadow of Shibe Park, graduated from Roman Catholic in 1942, Mr. Kerrigan served in the U.S. Navy in Trinidad, Hawaii and Iwo Jima during WWII. For 39 years Jim was a mechanic for SEPTA, retiring in 1981.

Jim and his late wife Rose, raised their family in Saint Anne’s Parish, Westville, retiring to Lakebridge 20 years ago where the attention of his children and grandchildren was unending and the friendship of his neighbors ever-faithful.

Beloved husband of the late Rose C. Kerrigan; devoted father of Patricia Rose McGuinness of Deptford, James T. Kerrigan, Jr. of Gloucester City, Kathryn \”Kass\” Murnock of Wilmington, NC, Janice Corrado of W. Deptford, Jeanette \”Jean\” Corrado of W. Deptford, Catherine \”Cathy\” Rankine of Ashville, NC, the late Hugh J. Boyle and the late Katherine Viator; grandfather fof 14; great grandfather of 12; brother of Margaret \”Peggy\” Wynn of Philadelphia.

JULIA GLADYS MEZZATESTA

Funeral Services were held for Julia Gladys Mezzatesta, 76, of Blackwood, formerly of Bellmawr, who passed away on November 13, 2009.

Mrs. Mezzatesta was a member of the Camden County Senior Citizens Club in Blackwood. She was a waitress at Ponzio’s Restaurant in Brooklawn for over 40 years.

Beloved wife of the late John. Devoted mother of Joan Otto (David), Donna Carullo (John) and Christine Gunning (Steve). Dear sister of James Fitzgerald (Jean). Loving grandmother of Jill, Juliane and Joshua Otto, Andrew Higareda, Steven, Thomas and Marsha Gunning.

Interment was in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing.

JOSEPH STEPANOW

Funeral Services were held for Joseph Stepanow, 83, of Mount Ephraim, who died November 16, 2009.

Mr. Stepanow was a 1944 graduate of Paulsboro High School. He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. Mr. Stepanow worked for General Electric for over 40 years. He was a fabulous gardener who enjoyed sharing his herbs and vegetables with everyone. He was also an avid fisherman. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Survived by his cousins Alexander and Eva Spolitback and their children and his dear friends of over 40 years Deborah and Bob Jones, Shirley and Paul Martin and many other friends and neighbors.

Interment was in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro.

JEER-The state of New Jersey announced recently that it is facing a $1 billion hole in this year’s budget — a shortfall five times bigger than previously disclosed — and will cut funding for schools, municipalities, higher education, hospitals and pension plans to help close the gap. Thank you Trenton politicians (Democrats and Republicans) for screwing up the state we call our home. You and I deserve some of the criticism too for electing these clowns year after year. We could solve the problem by passing a law that would allow no more than two terms in office. Get rid of the career politicians on both the state and federal level.

CHEER-To all those that volunteer their time to coach youth sports, raise money for charitable causes, donate their time to help others along with those who volunteer for the semi-annual City Cleanup Day. Thank you for all you do.

CHEER-The Gloucester City Mustangs 125lb football team won the conference title on Saturday, November 28, 2009 with a win over neighboring Westville. And a BIG Cheer for the Gloucester Catholic Girls Soccer Team who won their 6^th State Championship. Plus congratulations go out to the Gloucester Catholic football team who won the City title this year by beating Gloucester High 30-22.

JEER-Not sure if it is for the Gloucester City Water Department or the Gloucester City Highway Department. But there is a fire hydrant over on Goldy Drive in Gloucester City that was hit by a PSE&G truck last February. It was knocked sideways and is still that way after all this time. Will this ever get fixed? What happens if there is a fire in that area?

CHEER-TD Bank arrived in grand style this month opening up a welcome addition to the Broadway corridor. The new building, at Broadway and Cumberland Street, replaces an unsightly tavern property that stood in that location for many years. Kudos to all those involved who worked behind the scene to bring this business to Gloucester City.

JEER-To the police officer (s) riding around town on the three-wheel City Police vehicle without a safety helmet. What kind of example is he showing the kids who must wear a safety helmet when riding their bikes?

CHEER-TD Bank recently made a $5000 donation to the Gloucester City Library Board of Directors through its charitable foundation. Thank you from the residents of Gloucester City.

JEER-There is a vacant building on the south side of Market and the corner of King St. that has been for sale for quite some time. There are fragments of broken glass on the sidewalk of the Market Street side that have been there for months now. Who is responsible for the cleanup? The owner? The City? Children play near there. Litter is a huge problem and a huge blemish on our community and elsewhere.

CHEER-A big round of applause for the Boys Scouts and their leaders who run the annual Food Drive to be used in the City for those in need. Thank you to Scout Leader Bill Labbree Jr., who went out of his way to make a special trip to pick up food bag for the drive.

A contributor writes, \”JEER To the women in charge of the cheer leaders for having the girls stand our side of the WaWa begging for money on a holiday. The girls should have been home with their families. And I didn’t appreciate the foul language being used by one of the adults in the group.\”

CHEER-Applebee’s Restaurants throughout the area honored veterans on Veterans Day by giving them a free meal. The veterans could order whatever they wanted Free of Charge. What a great way to salute those who did so much for our country.

The dates have been finalized for the 2010 Legacy Run – the widely successful fundraising event that brings in motorcyclists from all over the country. Legion Riders will depart from Indianapolis on Aug. 22 and arrive Aug. 26 in Milwaukee, the site of the Legion’s 92nd National Convention.

The route will be determined at a later date.

Funds raised at the Legacy Run directly benefit The American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund, which provides college money for the children of servicemembers killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. The previous three Legacy runs have netted more than $1 million for the fund.

I’m not a fan of the \”outside\” dog, the dog that lives in the yard all day and all night, bored, lonely, sometimes destructive. Neither am I fond of the idea of leaving a dog in a crate for ten hours with no break for some fresh air and exercise.

Of course, almost anything is better than a (short) life spent in an overcrowded animal shelter, waiting for euthanization. Happily, there are simple ways you can enrich your dog’s life that cost almost nothing and offer mental and physical stimulation for everyone.

A cardboard box can give Fido hours of chewing, throwing, hiding, fun! Just set it in a room or outside and watch as he explores it with glee. Or, hang a ball from a piece of elastic, just out of his reach; chances are he will jump for it until he actually manages to set it free! And you can always hide a couple of toys in odd places and see how long it takes him to find them.

If you’re feeling adventurous social dogs seem to truly enjoy visiting Petco or Petsmart, a Disney World of sights and smells. And of course a brisk walk on a hiking trail will turn even the sleepiest dog into Dora the Explorer! This holiday season try wrapping up a few biscuits and watch Fido uncover his rewards along with the rest of the family. If you need more suggestions I’ll be happy to help. McCormick (Karen), Joyce Artuz (Julio) and Samuel Pine, dear grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mr. McCormick was a Proud Army Veteran. He was a retired member of the Gloucester City Special Police, but was more recently know for his long, devoted and loving service as a Crossing Guard at the St. Mary\’s School Corner.

The Lions were carried throughout by running back Steve Kumpf, who rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 2 yards in the first quarter and 66 in the fourth, but his team couldn\’t come up with a big play late in the game.

With the help of a 27-yard run by Kumpf, Gloucester drove to the Rams\’ 19-yard line but ran out of downs with 41 seconds to play.

It was an emotional loss.
