Bellmawr Council Annual Re-organization Meeting

Following the posting of colors by Cub Scout Pack 185, Alexis Harrop performed the National Anthem to open the Bellmawr Borough Council reorganization meeting.

Borough Clerk Charles J. Sauter III then certified the election before the swearing-in of Councilmen Lou Di Angelo and Steve Sauter by Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard, who also swore in Councilman Peter Di Giambattista as Council President.

Mayor Frank Filipek Sr. thanked the elected officials on hand, which included Assemblyman-elect Donald Norcross (D-5) and Angel Hernandez.

Under committee reports, all members of Council thanked everyone for coming out, including those elected officials present.

They also all wished everyone a happy and healthy new year.

Councilmen John Bollinger, along with Jim D’-Angelo, congratulated Di Giambattista and returning Councilmen Di Angelo and Sauter.

Sauter thanked his family and friends for all their support, along with Paige. He is looking forward to the next three years.

Di Angelo thanked his family, including his wife, daughter and father, and the Borough employees also.

Filipek closed the Committee Reports, and then told the Sauter and Di Angelo families that they do a fantastic job.

Filipek also congratulated Council President Di Giambattista, thanked the Borough employees, and wished everyone a happy and healthy new year.

All business on the evening’s agenda was unanimously approved, with the following exception:

As to Resolution #10:19-10, authorizing an agreement for professional engineering services by Remington & Vernick Engineers, Council President Di Giambattista requested it be tabled for another meeting, and Councilwoman Regina Piontkowski abstained from voting on the measure.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:28 pm, after which a reception was held at Crescent Park VFW 9563 on Essex Ave.

CHEER-To Dawn Watson for sharing her knowledge about pet care with the community. We also appreciate Dawn\’s positive attitude about living in our lovely town.

CHEER-To citizens who are stepping up and voicing their opinion about the situation with the county jail. We need those who \”are in the know about the effects and ramifications of this proposal to share their knowledge with the rest of us. We hope to see more concerned citizens make the time to let their voices be heard.

CHEER-To the Gloucester Marine Terminal management (formerly Holt) and the \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef011571114c5a970c-800wi\" company’s security department for their concern and prayers for my brother Steve Farrell who was hurt in an accident at home. Steve is a former City Police Chief and was the head of security for Gloucester Marine Terminal before he retired. I especially like to thank Bill Johnson, Bob Fair, Leo Holt and Bill Cleary. The Chief, as he still calls himself knows of their concern. Again thank you. Gloucester City is still like family to our family. ~Joe Farrell

JEER to the resident of the 300 block of Somerset Street who feels that it is perfectly acceptable to make a public parking spot his own by blocking the road with chairs even though there are elderly citizens and families with children who live on the block.

Setsubun or Bean Throwing Day

Setsubun literally means the \”division of seasons\” and refers to the first day of spring \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef01156ff02a98970c-800wi\" according to the lunar calendar. Setsubun falls on February 3rd or 4th.On the evening of this day, people throw roasted beans or peanuts, inside or outside their homes shouting \”Oniwa-sato, Fukuwa-uchi,\” which means \”Out with demons! In with good luck!\”

It also is customary for people to eat the same number of beans as their age and to offer a prayer for good fortune at home.

This practice is to have originated in the 14th or 15th century.

The bean-throwing ceremony also takes place in shrine and temple compounds throughout Japan. Well-known personalities, such as politicians, sumo wrestlers, singersM and actors, are invited to the ceremony as special guests to throw good luck beans or peanuts for all those present.

\"Setsubun\" The special guests are chosen from among those born under the Chinese and Japanese zodiac sign for the year.

This holiday was especially enjoyable when our kids were children we had some great fun with them and their friends.

\”Curtains\” plays at the Scottish Rite in February

The Collingswood Excelcior Theatre Company is proud to be one of the first area companies to stage the musical comedy whodunnit Curtains on February 11, 12, 13, 19. From the creators of Chicago and Cabaret, this hilarious send-up of backstage murder mystery plots recently completed a successful run on Broadway starring David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk.

Featuring brisk, witty dialogue and funny and beautiful songs, Curtains is set in Boston’s Colonial Theatre in 1959. The plot follows the fallout when the egregiously untalented leading lady, faded film star Jessica Cranshaw, a triple threat – she can\’t sing, act, or dance (or remember when to say her lines), collapses during her opening night curtain call of the aspiring Broadway production Robbin\’ Hood of the Old West.

The reviews of Robbin\’ Hood are bad, and the show has lost its star. Divorced songwriting team Aaron Fox and Georgia Hendricks, together with the show\’s naive financial backer, Oscar Shapiro, and Carmen Bernstein, the hard-bitten co-producer (with her philandering husband, Sidney), bemoan the situation. The show\’s flamboyant director, Christopher Belling, has an idea: Georgia can sing, and she used to act, and she knows the show perfectly. She would be a far better leading lady than Cranshaw was, although that is not saying much.

News comes that Cranshaw is dead, and more than that, she has been murdered. Homicide detective Frank Cioffi, a starstruck amateur community theatre actor, is called in to solve the case. The cast and crew are all suspects as Cioffi sequesters them in the theatre.Even while subsequent murders are occurring, Cioffi’s obsession with the show nearly overtakes his mission to solve the case.

Performances are February 11, 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Scottish Rite Auditorium, 315 White Horse Pike, Collingswood. Group rates (groups of 15 or more) are available for all shows. Call Dale at 609-217-4691 for information.

 Curtains will host a luncheon prior to the Saturday, February 20 matinee. Lunch is at 12:30 pm and the cost is $25 per person, which includes a ticket to the matinee. Reservations are required. Call Terry at 856-858-9275.
