Hunting and Fishing News for April 18

NRA NEWS

News reports indicate that the U.S. House of Representatives may consider legislation next week to which an amendment reforming Washington, D.C.\’s restrictive gun laws would likely be offered. The bill-H.R. 157, the District of Columbia Voting Rights Act, introduced by the District\’s anti-gun delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton-proposes that the city be authorized a vote in the United States House of Representatives.

NRA members recall that last year, a similar \”D.C. House Voting Rights Act\” bill-S. 160, introduced by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.)-passed in the Senate after adoption of Sen. John Ensign\’s (R-Nev.) amendment restoring the Second Amendment rights of residents of our nation\’s capital. Supporters of H.R. 157 did not pursue it at that time, however, to perpetuate gun control in D.C.

Progress Made On Military Once-Fired Brass IssueATK Stops Scrapping Cartridge Cases: On Friday, April 16, Montana\’s U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester announced that ATK-the defense conglomerate that operates the Army\’s Lake City ammunition plant, and that owns the Federal ammunition, RCBS reloading equipment, and Alliant smokeless gunpowder companies-is voluntarily withdrawing from contracts it made with military bases to collect and scrap once-fired small arms cartridge cases. The scrapping of the cases became an issue several weeks ago, when it was determined to be partially responsible for reducing the quantity of intact cartridge cases sold to companies that use them to produce reloaded ammunition for sale to private individuals.

Don D\’Ambra Named Saint Joseph\’s Men\’s Soccer Coach

April 15, 2010

\"4975287\"  PHILADELPHIA – Professional and collegiate soccer standout Don D\’Ambra will return to his alma mater to become the head men\’s soccer coach at Saint Joseph\’s University, as announced today by SJU director of athletics Don DiJulia. D\’Ambra is just the fourth head coach in the program\’s history.

D\’Ambra is arguably one of the most decorated SJU student-athletes to be named a head coach on Hawk Hill. He returns to Saint Joseph\’s after a successful coaching and playing career with the Philadelphia Kixx of the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League). He played 16 seasons in the MISL, the last 14 with the Kixx. In 2002, he assumed duties as the head coach of the Kixx, and has served as vice president of soccer operations/head coach since then, while also continuing his playing career.

D\’Ambra helped the Kixx to two MISL championships, as a player in 2002 and as the player/coach in 2007. He was a four-time All-Star and is the Kixx\’ all-time leading scorer, amassing 388 goals and 905 points. In eight seasons as head coach, he totaled 119 wins, which is the most in the team\’s history.

\”We are pleased and honored to welcome back Don D\’Ambra as our new head men\’s soccer coach. Don is committed to the SJU mission to enhance the overall student-athlete experience,\” said DiJulia. \”Don\’s passion and commitment to excel will encourage the success of our student-athletes and the soccer program from its solid foundation built by his predecessors – Tom Turner, Jack Ruggero and Jack Dunn. \”

School-issued laptops took thousands of secret images – Worth Reading

By John P. Martin

\"\"The system that Lower Merion school officials used to track lost and stolen laptops wound up secretly capturing thousands of images, including photographs of students in their homes, Web sites they visited, and excerpts of their online chats, says a new motion filed in a suit against the district.

More than once, the motion asserts, the camera on Robbins\’ school-issued laptop took photos of Robbins as he slept in his bed. Each time, it fired the images off to network servers at the school district.

Gloucester City School Budget Will Increase Local Taxes

By Linda Boker-Angelo

NEWS Correspondent

The Gloucester City Board of Education last week approved a proposed $38.8 million, 2010-11 budget, which would increase school taxes by about $31 per year.

\"image\" If passed, the owner of a home assessed at the City average of $70,000 will pay about $2.57 more per month in school taxes.

Superintendent Paul Spaventa said that $2.2 million was cut from the original budget, including $901,000 from the district’s technology budget and $489,000 in employee salaries and benefits. Eight employees were \”lost\” due to retirement, resignation or a non-renewed contract.

Spaventa noted that while eight people were \”cut,\”, no positions were lost as existing employees were shifted to fill the vacancies.

He complimented district administrators for going over their respective budgets and finding areas where money could be saved.

Board members praised Spaventa and his administrative team for their hard work on the budget, which resulted in a \”minimal\” tax increase with no lost programs, even in the midst of very challenging financial times.

Residents will cast their votes on the budget during the annual School Election April 20 from 2 to 9 p.m.

In other business, Board members voted to change next year’s school calendar to abbreviate Spring Break.

In 2011, students will be off on Good Friday, Easter Monday and Tuesday, and will return to school on Wednesday.

The Board’s reorganization meeting will be Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m.

The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Both meetings will take place in the Gloucester High School Media Center.
