WHEN EAST MEETS WEST
Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr.

Great natural beauty, history and tradition, peaceful scenery, and the friendly local \"Hank citizens. Okagaki is a town to make you feel happy, and right at home and only 20 minutes from our home. We have been going there since 1983. It’s the most relaxing place with beautiful scenery.

Quiet and somehow familiar scenery greets you here: the sparkling waters of the Hibiki Sea, the grandeur of the Sanri Matsubara Pine Forest, and the beautiful landscape.

Naritasan Fudoji Temple is where our pictures are taken. This shingon Buddhist temple is famed for its cherry blossoms, and attracts many worshippers from around Japan for a variety of prayers, including freedom from disasters, longevity, luck, and traffic safety.

During the major festivals, believers read their prayers aloud from the small boards they are written on, and then cast them into the flames in a special ceremony. The believers also walk on fire here in a ceremony of esoteric Buddhism. The view from the temple grounds is superb, covering all of Sanri Matsubara and, on a clear day one can \"Hank see all the way to Honshu.
