Dodging the Trump Bullet by Luigi Zingales – City Journal

Americans—and Republicans—are lucky that the Donald has bowed out.
19 May 2011

Donald Trump’s announcement that he will not run in the Republican presidential primaries after all is great news for the Republican Party and for the country. The only thing more frightening than Trump’s running for president would be Trump’s getting elected president. From a party perspective, while losing an election is bad, winning one with the wrong candidate for the party and for the country is worse. I know something about this: I come from Italy, a country that has elected as prime minister the Trumplike Silvio Berlusconi.

Trump and Berlusconi are remarkably alike. They are both billionaire businessmen who claim that the government should be run like a business. They are both gifted salesmen, able to appeal to the emotions of their fellow citizens. They are both obsessed with their looks, with their hair (or what remains of it), and with sexy women. Their gross manners make them popular, perhaps because people think that if these guys could become billionaires, anyone could. Most important is that both Trump and Berlusconi made their initial fortunes in real estate, an industry where connections and corruption often matter as much as, or more than, talent and hard work. Indeed, while both pretend to stand for free markets, what they really believe in is what most of us would label crony capitalism.

Berlusconi’s policies have been devastating to Italy. He has been prime minister for eight of the last ten years, during which time the Italian per-capita GDP has dropped 4 percent, the debt-to-GDP ratio has…………………..

Gloucester City Resident Pastor of Circle of Hope

Message of hope for old Pennsauken firehouse

by Jim Walsh | courierpostonline.com

Circle of Hope believes its needs will be met through the Marlton Pike station, said Nate Hulfish, the 32-year-old pastor of the local congregation.

\”It\’s ready-made for us,\” he said, noting the six-bay station has a hall for church functions, as well as a kitchen, restrooms and ample parking.

At the same time, Hulfish will not be sliding down a pole to address church gatherings. \”It\’s a one-story building, but I hear that joke a lot,\” he observed wryly.

Circle of Hope is not a typical church, said Hulfish, a former youth minister and mental health worker. \”In the region, I think it\’s unique,\” the Gloucester City resident said.

For example, participants often meet in \”cells,\” or groups of 10. \”We talk about life and the needs of our community and how to meet those needs,\” said Hulfish, noting cells gather in informal settings like homes and coffeehouses.

The larger congregation comes together for \”public meetings\” on Sunday evenings.

And Hulfish balks at the word \”members,\” saying that has \”such an \”insider\’ or \”club\’ connotation.\” Instead, he says the South Jersey congregation, which began with fewer than 20 adults and a handful of children, now has about 100 \”regular attenders.\”

Bills Point of View: IT’S NOT THE DOG’S FAULT!

By Bill Cleary

(CNBNEWS.NET) I enjoy my daily walks with Erica and Lacey but lately I
have wondered whether or not I should continue. Within the past two weeks we have been attacked by a pit bull and also a little rag mop of a dog. I been told this same pit bull has gone after other dogs as well in the neighborhood. As for the rag mop, well he bit Lacey hard enough that she let out a yelp! He also bit Erica’s nose.
