Debt the Teachers\’ Unions Cause Us by Larry Sand – City Journal

The California Teachers Association is a major contributor to the Golden State’s fiscal woes.
10 May 2011

California’s chronic fiscal crisis should prompt a substantive debate about the limits of government and the folly of an expansive welfare state. Instead, leaders of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association are using the struggle to close the Golden State’s $15.4 billion budget deficit as an opportunity for some political street theater. The powerful National Education Association state affiliate is spending this week highlighting California’s \”state of emergency,\” with large rallies planned in Sacramento and around the state Friday to agitate for billions of dollars in higher taxes.

The union’s timing is not by chance. Governor Jerry Brown will unveil his revised budget on May 16, and deep cuts to the K-12 education budget could mean widespread teacher layoffs as early as next month. Californians can expect heavy doses of union demagoguery this week and in the coming months, as Brown works to forge a deal with Republicans who unequivocally oppose any income- or sales-tax hikes, \”temporary\” or otherwise.

For the teachers’ union, kids are the best props. Already we’re hearing the familiar nostrums: \”Cuts hurt children,\” \”What’s good for the teachers is good for the students,\” and \”Don’t sacrifice our kids’ futures.\” What the CTA really means is, \”Tax the rich,\” \”Give us more money,\” and, above all, \”Save our jobs.\” At first, the union considered more drastic action to make its point. Among the tactics union organizers contemplated: Attempting to close a major freeway route; having students and parents picket and occupy schools overnight; and protesting in front of recalcitrant legislators’ homes and businesses. CTA planners also suggested some downright

Brooklawn Man Stabbed 9 Times During Fight Outside of Pennant East Bar in Bellmawr

by Bill Cleary

(CNBNEWS.NET)- A 28- year- old Brooklawn man was stabbed numerous times during a fight in the Pennant East \"Unknown-11\" Bar parking lot, Route 130, Bellmawr on April 23, 2011.

According to the victim, Larry Daniels, he was outside of the bar and was leaning on a vehicle. Daniels said he and the owner of the vehicle, Aaron Beebe, got into a verbal argument that escalated into a fight.

During that fight Beebe allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Daniels 9 times.

According to his mother Patricia Newlin her son Larry was taken to the Cooper Trauma Center, Camden City. She said he also had a collapsed lung. \”The doctor told me the knife blade just missed one of his vital organs by 2 cm.\”

Bellmawr Police Chief William Walsh said Beebe was 37- years- old and lived in Runnemede. Beebe was charged with criminal attempt/for criminal homicide do to the multiple stab wounds (9), aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Bail was set at $150,000.

Newlin, who contacted CNBNews said, \”There has been no press coverage about this incident. I feel as though the public has a right to know. I had heard there have been several incidents at this night club and in my opinion it is a dangerous place. If you are looking for help from the staff when you are in trouble don’t expect any, my son got stabbed right in front of their doors and no one came to help him.\”

Chief Walsh said, \”As for many incidents, this is a bar where people drink and become intoxicated. I would not say that it is a constant problem bar, but we have calls from time to time involving assaults, just like other bars in the area.\”

\”I know that the mother was upset about no staff helping him, but the call for the incident was received at 3:32 AM and the bar closes at 3 AM, staff was cleaning up and not stationed at the door like they are when the bar is open and having customers arriving,\” said Walsh.

Daniels has been released from the hospital. Asked how he is doing his mother said, \”Pretty good considering.\”

The suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE PAYNE, Afghanistan, May 5, 2011 – For much of their deployment, Marines of the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion have found an insurgent force that was reluctant to fight them toe to toe.
