BREAKING NEWS: Brooklawn Legion Wins Mid-Atlantic Title; Play in World Series Starting on Friday, August 12

(CNBnews.net)BOYERTOWN PA-Brooklawn beat Boyertown PA today in the finals of the Mid-Atlantic Legion Tournament and now will head to the Legion World Series in Shelby, North Carolina . The Brookers and The Bears have a long history going back to the 1980‘s and 1990‘s. Today’s game was a repeat of some those battles of long ago.

 

Boyertown got on the score board first and jumped ahead in the first inning with two runs. Brooklawn came right back an tied the game. Boyertown got another run in the second inning, score 3-2. In the 4th inning Brooklawn took the momentum getting five runs on six hits and an error. They lead 7-3 after 4. 

 

The score remained 7-3 until the eight inning when Brooklawn adds two more runs.

 

In the 8th inning the Bears Ryan Pinter comes in relief and works his way out of a bases loaded jam. He is struck in the face by a ball but recovers to get the out. Great play by Pinter when you consider that he was hurt. 

 

Top of the ninth, Brooklawn is three outs away from the title. But the Bears would not go quietly. Boyertown’s first three runners reach, they have a run in with nobody out. Two more runs in on an RBI double by Jeffrey Werner. Lead cut to three nobody out.

 

The Bears Jeffrey Gehringer hits a single and drives in two more runs. The Bears trail by one. Still no one out. The crowd is standing, fans from both sides can’t believe what is happening. 

 

After a flyout, Boyertown’s Hartman comes in to hit and works a walk. Two on, one down for Cameron Ferreri the ninth hitter. Brooklawn makes a change in pitchers, left-handed ace Cody Brown. Ferreri gets a base hit and ties the game, still two on, one down. The Bears Schwager files out, two down. Brown strikes out the next batter.

 

Crowd continues to stand, yelling. What an exciting game. Score tied 9-9. 

 

Hartman back on the mound for Boyertown. 

 

Brooklawn has a runner at second after a walk and a stolen base. One down.

 

Ground out to short, two down, runner at third. 

 

Robbie Alessandrine up for the Brookers. 

 

A wild pitch, catcher Josh Schnell throws to Hartman but the runner gets by the tag. Brooklawn wins it 10-9. 

 

Brooklawn’s march to the Mid Atlantic title began on Thursday with a win over Blackhawk PA 6-5. Up next host Boyertown on Friday, final 9-5 Brooklawn. Saturday’s game was against Middletown DE which was stopped in the 7th inning on the 10 run mercy rule, final 10-0. On Sunday Brooklawn beat Charlestown WVA by a score of 6-2.

 

The Mid Atlantic Tournament champions will now head to Shelby North Carolina to play in the Legion World Series that begin on Friday, August 12 and ends on August 16.

 

Now in its 60th year Brooklawn American Legion Post 72 won the World Series title in 1991 and 2001. The last time they made an appearance in the World Series was in 2005 when it was held in Rapid City, South Dakota. 

 

For those interested Shelby is about 10 hour drive from Brooklawn, according to Mapquest or approximately 590 miles. ESPN3.com will be showing all of the games via a live stream.

Elizabeth A. Butterworth, of Gloucester City; Services Wednesday

 Elizabeth A. (Stateler) Butterworth departed this world Friday, Aug. 5, 2011.

She is survived by her children, Heather (Harry), Shannon (Troy) and Jason (Julina); and her three adored grandchildren. She also is survived by many other loving relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Butterworth.She possessed a gift to make strangers into friends, touching lives throughout her years. Though she has left us, the inspiration and legacy of her love will carry on. Her friends and family will always cherish their memories of her, whether recalling her love of the beach, her devotion to her grandchildren, or her stories about nearly everything. 

Relatives and friends are invited to meet from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, at Etherington-Creran Funeral Home, 700 Powell St., Gloucester City, N.J. Funeral services will be held at noon with interment to follow in New St. Mary\’s Cemetery, Bellmawr, N.J.
