PolitickerNJ.com Names George Norcross the Most Powerful, Coming In at Number 3

On December 3, 2012, PolitickerNJ.com unveiled its esteemed list of the 100 most influential figures in New Jersey politics, and it’s exciting to see South Jersey’s own George Norcross recognized at an impressive Number 3! This list, which has been a staple since its inception in March 2000, highlights the impactful insiders impacting politics and governance in the Garden State—ranging from policymakers and party leaders to fundraisers and lobbyists—while intentionally excluding elected officials and judges.

In a remarkable display of political prowess during the November elections, Norcross successfully maintained control over his South Jersey legislative stronghold and even managed to gain an additional seat in the Assembly. His close ally, state Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3), will continue his vital leadership for another two-year term. Furthermore, Norcross secured a notable agreement with state Senator Nick Sacco (D-32) that strategically elevates South Jersey’s representation in the Assembly by promoting South Jersey Assemblyman Lou Greenwald to the influential position of Majority Leader.

For those not yet familiar with Mr. Norcross, his journey is truly inspiring. He first embarked on his career path after leaving Rutgers University in Camden in the 1970s to launch a small insurance company. His first foray into government came in the 1980s when he was appointed by Camden’s mayor to serve as Chairman of the city’s parking authority. By 1989, his exceptional skills in campaign strategy and union mobilization led to his selection as chair of Camden County’s Democratic Organization, a position he held until 1995. Following his tenure there, his insurance company was acquired by Commerce Bancorp, which provided him with an exciting opportunity to create its insurance division, further enhancing both his and the bank’s influence within state affairs.

Today, Norcross is recognized as a successful entrepreneur, sometimes referred to as the ‘King’ by those on opposing sides of the political spectrum. He enjoys a luxurious lifestyle, spending winters in Palm Beach Island and summers in his beautiful oceanfront home in Loveladies on Long Beach Island.

In 2006, he purchased the stunning Downey Home on Everglades Island in Palm Beach for $10.9 million. This charming, one-story Bermuda-style residence, built in 1954 and thoughtfully renovated by architect John Volk, spans 6,142 square feet and offers breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway—what an exquisite retreat!

Beyond politics, Norcross enjoys a vibrant social life, often spending quality time with notable personalities like tennis enthusiasts Joy and Regis Philbin, or visiting Mar-a-Lago as a guest of former President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Palm Beach Daily News back in 2006, Norcross expressed that buying a home in Palm Beach was “a good excuse,” especially given that Commerce Bank was rapidly expanding in the area, having opened six locations in Palm Beach County, including one right on Bradley Place. He also talked about searching for insurance firms to acquire in southern Florida—it’s clear he’s always thinking ahead!
