Joseph Kowalski, US Army Veteran, Retired Navy Yard Employee, Volunteer Fireman, GHS Alumnus

Joseph Kowalski, of Gloucester City, NJ passed away on his 85th Birthday with his \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef01539037fcc3970b-200wi\" five children at his side. Born on January 17, 1928. Joe was predeceased by his wife, the late Pat (nee McCann). Lovingfather of Jane (Michael) Dooling, Eric (Rusty) Kowalski, John (Lynn) Kowalski,Betsy (John) Logan and Joann (Bill) Leeds. Beloved grandfather of 1grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his 6 siblings, John, Anne(Edward) Tucker, Steve (Pearl), Andy (Lee), Helen (Edward) Conroy and Henry (Joyce). Brother –in-law to Ray McCann and Colleen (Joseph) Tanzi. Also uncle of many loving nieces and nephews.

Joe graduated from Gloucester City High School. He was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Joe proudly served our country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After returning from Germany, he played semi-pro football for the Gloucester Mustangs. An electrician by trade, who retired from the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, he was also a member of Co. #4 Gloucester Heights Volunteer Fire Department. Joe loved \"Bilde\"spending his twilight summers in Ocean City, NJ.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM and again on Tuesday morning from 8 to 9 AM at the McCANN-HEALEY FUNERAL HOME: 851 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 9:45 AM at St. Mary\’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. Homeless vets: better, but more to be done

Leaders of The American Legion’s Economic Division say they are encouraged by the latest government report showing a continued decrease in the rate of homelessness among military veterans. On Dec. 10, the departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development announced that the number of homeless veterans dropped by about 7 percent between January 2011 and January 2012. The veteran homeless rate had dropped 12 percent the previous year, according to those same sources.

Obama: Blame for Algeria Tragedy Rests With Terrorists

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19, 2013 – The nation\’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Algeria, and the blame for the tragedy rests with the terrorists who carried it out, President Barack Obama said today.

In a statement, the president said the United States condemns the terrorists\’ actions \”in the strongest possible terms.\”

Bishop captures 200th coaching victory for TCNJ men’s swimming



January 19, 2013-Ewing, NJ … Head coach Brian Bishop captured his 200th career coaching victory as The College of New Jersey men’s swimming team defeated William Paterson University 171-100 on Saturday afternoon in TCNJ’s Aquatic Center.

Bishop, currently in his 24th season in charge of the Lion’s program, recorded all 200 victories with TCNJ. The Lions’ swimmers made sure of their head coach’s milestone by placing first in all 12 individual events and both relay races.

FDA approves new seasonal influenza vaccine made using novel technology

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it has approved Flublok, the first trivalent influenza vaccine made using an insect virus (baculovirus) expression system and recombinant DNA technology. Flublok is approved for the prevention of seasonal influenza in people 18 through 49 years of age.

On January 15, 2013. Age 49. Of Gloucester City. Son of the late Edward C., Jr. and Olive F. Oehlert. Loving husband of Jackie (nee Williams) Loving father of Patrick, Jr., Jacqueline LaPento(Chris), Maria, Edward, Ariel, Lisa, Justin, Juliann, Charlene. Cherished grandfather of Nicole, William, Patrick, Joseph, Gianna, Romeo and Valerie. Dear brother of Edward, Charles, Alexander, John, Wayne and the late Ronald. Also survived by many great sister-in-laws. 

 

Patrick was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. 

 

Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial visitation on Monday from 5 to 6 PM at First Baptist Church of Gloucester City: 400 Monmouth St., Gloucester City. Baptist Memorial Service at 6 PM. Big League Softball World Series Relocating to Sussex County, Delaware

The Executive Committee of the Little League International Board of Directors has approved relocating the Big League Softball World Series tournament to Sussex County, Del.

Currently, the Lower Sussex Little League Complex in Sussex County, Del., is host to the Senior League Softball World Series. Beginning with the 2013 season the Senior League Softball and Big League Softball World Series tournaments will share the facility and be played simultaneously, during the week of Aug. 4-10.

Alpenrose Stadium to Receive National Honor

Alpenrose Stadium has been selected as the 2012 Softball Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA).

The stadium’s playing surface is maintained by Mike Hebrard of Athletic Field Design (AFD) and his crew based in Clackamas, Ore. Mr. Hebrard will accept the award during the 24th Annual STMA Conference and Exhibition in Daytona Beach, Fla., Jan., 15-18. Alpenrose Stadium will be recognized as the top field in the Schools and Parks category.
