Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame to Induct 15 New Members!

Former Paulsboro standout football quarterback Kevin Harvey and former Clayton High School basketball star Al Anderson will be among the 15 new inductees to the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame during the 33rd Annual Induction Banquet on March 19, 2013 at Auletto’s Caterers in Almonesson, the Executive Committee has announced.
 
This year\’s inductees also include: Harry Dilks (Pitman); Fran Iacovone (Gloucester Catholic); Ryan Knight (Delsea); Fred Powell (Williamstown); Laura Goetz-Quirk (Gateway); Ruth Lockbaum-Cibo (Glassboro); Tara Harris-Marker (Deptford); Dave Smith (West Deptford); Dom Antonini (Rowan University); Sam Muni (Washington Twp.), David Maxwell (Washington Twp.), Tom Reim (Woodbury), and Dennis Burlingame (Kingsway).

Playing Favorites: Off-track wager site will pay off in Gloucester Township | courierpostonline.com

Every Friday, retired buddies Mario Chiodi and Joe Boulden visit Favorites at Vineland, an off-track wagering parlor.

This summer the pair will have a betting facility much closer to home when a new wagering site gallops into Camden County.

Penn National Gaming Inc., of Wyomissing, Pa., recently signed a lease with the owners of the building that formerly housed the Stone Grille eatery in Gloucester Township. Penn plans to open the betting facility by Labor Day.

The 15,000-square-foot building, with its existing bar, kitchen and dining areas, made the acquisition a good bet for Penn, said Chris McErlean, the company’s vice president\"\" for racing.

\”We’ll be doing some renovations, but there won’t be a whole lot of physical changes to the building,\” McErlean said of the site, at 1300 Blackwood-Clementon Road. The OTW will be called Favorites at Gloucester Township.

\”We’re looking to change the model (for OTWs) in Gloucester Township, making it more of a turnkey location instead of starting from scratch or totally remodeling an entire facility. This will be a lower investment level and we’ll be able to have a quicker turnaround.\”

Their goal, as expressed by Cardinal Dolan, is to reach \”an acceptable solution\” to this issue.

DUCKS Baseball Picked to Finish Third in Empire 8

 

 

 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 7, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team has been chosen to finish third in the Empire 8 Conference this season by the five coaches of the league. Stevens ended the 2012 season in third behind St. John Fisher College and Ithaca College after a 24-18 campaign.

Ithaca has been selected by the coaches to claim its 11th Empire 8 crown in the conference’s 13-year existence with four first place votes. The Bombers finished last season with a 29-10-1 overall record and earned a trip to the NCAA New York Regional Tournament.

TO THE EDITOR:

Republicans and \”so-called\” conservatives are at it again. They are claiming that the Constitution gives people the right to have guns without the permission of the government. If that were true, then how could New York and Chicago have laws against it?

We Democrats are sick and tired of Republicans constantly using the Constitution to cover up their true plans, which are to make us all afraid of everyone else. Our great president came from a civilized part of the country where there is strict gun control, and he is only trying to bring the benefits of that more modern way of living to the rest of us. I don’t know the exact statistics, but I’m quite certain that Chicago is a lot safer that Morehead City, when it comes to gun violence.

The data show that the Lone Star State’s prosperity is no mirage.

The American economy has had little to cheer about since the 2008 financial meltdown and the resulting recession. Recovery has been feeble, and many states continue to struggle. One bright spot in the general gloom, however, is Texas, which began shining long before 2008. Not only has Texas created jobs at a stunning rate; it has also—pace critics like the New York Times’s Paul Krugman—created lots of good jobs. Indeed, the rest of the nation could turn to the Lone Star State as a model for dynamic growth, as a close look at employment data shows.

The first thing to point out is that Texan job creation has far outpaced the national average. The number of jobs in Texas has grown by a truly impressive 31.5 percent since 1995, compared with just 12 percent nationwide, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data (see Figure One). Texas has also lapped California, an important economic rival and the only state with a larger population. The Texas employment situation after the financial crisis was far less spectacular, of course, with the number of jobs growing just 2.4 percent from 2009 through 2011. But that was still six times the anemic 0.4 percent growth rate of the overall American economy.

  Former Camden catcher among two coaching changes for upcoming season

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Camden Riversharks have added former Riversharks catcher, major league champion and Pennsville Township native, Chris Widger, to the coaching staff for the 2013 season.

Widger, a 2005 World Series champion and nine-year veteran of Major League Baseball (MLB), joins the Riversharks as Camden’s pitching coach. A 1992 MLB draft pick and member of the 2004 Riversharks team, Widger will take his first professional coaching position with Camden after coaching at Pennsville Memorial in New Jersey in 2012.

LEGACY

A man who looked at the world from a different point of view and marched to the beat of his own drum is the legacy that Danny leaves behind.

Born and raised in Washington Twp., Danny graduated from Gloucester Catholic with the Class of 1990 where he was a member of the wrestling team. He worked for the Gloucester County Department of Corrections and Security Department at Rowan University. Danny also worked as a server at the Hard Rock Café in Atlantic City, NJ.

Away from his work, Danny would faithfully attend the Men of Malvern Retreats with his father and brother; he was a member of the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit. Danny loved spending times with his family and friends, cheering on the Cowboys and the Flyers and playing video games. Fishing was also a passion of his.
Danny will be sadly missed by the many lives that he touched with his contagious smile and comedic actions.

Danny is the beloved son of Lawrence & Barbara (nee Gardiner) Reader; cherished brother of Karen and the late Michael; dear uncle of Ashley, Madison, Michael \”Mickey\” and Ayden; beloved master to \”Coco\”.
