Legendary Baseball Coach Dave Martin \’66 Pays a Visit to Gloucester Catholic

With more than 500 victories in 32 seasons at Cherry Hill East, Dave Martin is naturally regarded as one of South Jersey\’s all-time greatest baseball coaches.

Mr. Martin, who graduated Gloucester Catholic in 1966, paid a surprise visit to his alma mater on Wednesday, January 16, with one of his objectives to visit old classmate Robert Nark, a long-time GC science instructor and department chair.

Mission accomplished, as the former classmates caught up on old times while current students looked on during Mr. Nark\’s 6th-period class.

Woodbury\’s Bryant McKinnie finally reaches football\’s biggest game | NJ.com

Bryant McKinnie has had a lot of ups and downs in his football career since graduating from Woodbury High School in 1997.

But this Sunday night it will all be worth it as the 11th-year offensive tackle will play in football’s biggest game, Super Bowl XLVII.

\”It was a long journey,\” he said of finally making it to the Super Bowl. \”I was just patient and waited my turn, and I finally got my turn.\”

Originally a defensive tackle, McKinnie started his college career at Lackawanna Junior College (Scranton, Pa.). After only starting to play organized football as a junior in high school, McKinnie put on extra weight while in Scranton and made the transition to the offensive line — and his career took off.

He played in the junior college all-star bowl game as a freshman and went on to be named an All-American. He transferred to the University of Miami in 1999, and after redshirting for a year, he went on to be an All-American the next two seasons and won the Jim Parker Award (best college offensive lineman) and Outland Trophy (best interior lineman) in 2001.

Obituary: Charles F. McCullen, age 66, of Atco NJ

McCULLEN

Of Atco, NJ, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 1, 2013, at the age of 66. Son of $\"6a00d8341bf7d953ef01539037fcc3970b-200wi\"$ the late Kathryn (nee Austin) and Ralph McCullen. Grandson of the late Margaret Frances (nee Whitlock) Austin. Loving husband of Jean (nee McGeehan); father of son, Sean, and daughter, Kristen; and grandfather of Aubrey McCullen. Survived by sisters Margaret (late James) Deering, Patricia (Eugene) Callahan and Kathryn Neal; brother-in-law John (Margaret) McGeehan; sisters-in-law Eileen (late Russell) Hubler, Michele (Robert) Wankel, and Denise (Gary) Miller, and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by sister Ruth (Francis) Boland.

Mr. McCullen served in the U.S. Army from January 1966 through December 1968, including a tour in Korea. He worked as a salesman in South Jersey for Allied Beverage Group since June 1998. A graduate of the Monsignor Bonner High School class of 1965 and a huge Villanova fan, Charlie loved the Jersey Shore and bike-riding, cooking, especially Sunday dinners, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his visitation on Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Christ The Redeemer Parish: Assumption R.C. Church: 318 Carl Hasselhan Drive, Atco, NJ 08004. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM in the church. Inurnment private.

Catholic League\’s Bill Donohue comments on the death of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch:

In the early 1970s, when I was having a problem with the Veterans Bureau obtaining my GI Bill money, I contacted my congressman, Rep. Ed Koch. The next week, the check was sent. When I taught in Spanish Harlem in a Catholic elementary school in the 1970s, at my behest, my students wrote to Rep. Koch about some issues. They were shocked when they received a speedy and thoughtful reply.

I got to know Ed Koch on a personal level 20 years ago. We met and corresponded many times over the years, and he was always cordial, courageous, and totally honest. Ed was not only a man of conviction, he was the number-one person in the Jewish community that Catholics could count on to speak out against anti-Catholicism. Indeed, he hated anti-Catholicism as much as he did anti-Semitism, or any other kind of bigotry. His relationship with the late John Cardinal O’Connor was special, and their mutual affection was palpable.

Ed Koch will be missed. There was no one like him.
