Santilli leads milestone quest as Raptors top Swarthmore

\"John

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 22, 2013) – Senior third baseman John Santilli (Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph-Hammonton) went 3-for-3 to pull within one hit of the 100 career milestone and a pair of other Scarlet Raptors pulled within one of single-season program records as Rutgers University-Camden defeated Swarthmore College, 7-3, in a Senior Night baseball game Monday at Campbell’s Field.

The Scarlet Raptors improve to 19-17, while the Garnet falls to 20-14.

\"Adrian

Rutgers-Camden scored seven runs from the third through the seventh innings to wipe out an early 1-0 deficit in a game that saw senior pitcherAdam Satanoff (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) raise his record to 7-2 with a one-inning relief stint and junior shortstop Adrian Gonzalez (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) drive home two runs in the third inning with his 15th double of the season.

Satanoff needs one more win to tie Michael Murphy’s single-season program mark of eight victories, set in 2002. Gonzalez, meanwhile, needs only one double to tie Matt Hunt’s program mark of 16, set in 2010. With 38 RBIs, Gonzalez also is chasing the single-season program mark of 46 RBIs, set by Gerry Gatelein in 1996.

\"Ethan

Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors honored the 11 seniors on the 2013 team: Santilli, Satanoff, Shaune Collins (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), Joe DiMento (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township), Nicco Esgro (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro), Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove), Bruce Monro (Matawan, NJ/Matawan Regional), Dave Prager (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), Ethan Rhinehart (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro), Albert Rivera (Matawan, NJ/Matawan Regional) and Joe Sirolli (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson).

The Garnet scored a first-inning run on an RBI double by junior first baseman Nicko Burnett (Anaheim, CA/Lutheran) and left the bases loaded against Raptor junior starter Jim Turner (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross), but couldn’t get anything else in the four-inning stint against the 6-3 righty. Turner allowed three this, one walk and three hit batsmen, struck out two and surrendered only the one earned run.

\"Joe

Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good in a two-run third inning. Santilli drilled a bullet off the Garnet shortstop for his first hit of the night and the 97th of his career. Rivera followed with his own single, the 95th hit of his career, and both scored on a double by Gonzalez down the left field line.

A walk to junior second baseman George Spingler (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), a single by Collins and a RBI single by Santilli made it a 3-1 game in the fourth inning.

\"Jim

In the fifth inning, Gonzalez walked, stole second and scored on a single by Prager. The Raptors added two more runs in the sixth when Collins reached on an error and was tripled home by Santilli. Esgro reached second base as Santilli was caught at the plate on a fielder’s choice, and he scored when Sirolli reached on an infield error.

The Raptors’ final run came in the seventh after Rhinehart singled and stole second. He scored on a single up the middle by DiMento.

Swarthmore received two hits apiece from senior catcher Sean Bryant (Mount Vernon, NY/Rye Country Day) and sophomore leftfielder Brian Kaissi (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Wissahickon).

Swarthmore returns to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Ursinus College.

Rutgers-Camden hosts Rutgers-Newark Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference action.

ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT: THE BOSTON BOMBINGS AND THEIR AFTERMATH

Weekly Column (Friday, April 19, 2013)

Violence and grief in the Boston area have rightly dominated our news media for the past week. The latest terrorist bloodshed is not at all senseless. It\’s the work of calculated malice. Innocent people, including children, have paid the price for other people\’s hatred. Our most important task right now is to pray for the victims and their families. God exists, and God can heal even the worst suffering, despite every human attempt to ignore him and every terrible sin that seems to \”disprove\” his presence. And yet it\’s fair to ask: How can a good God allow this kind of evil to happen?
