Flames erupt from the Southwest Inn on U.S. 59 in Houston on Friday, May 31, 2013.FIREHOUSE.COM NEWS
CREATED: MAY 31, 2013
HOUSTON (AP) — Four firefighters were killed while battling a fire that engulfed a Houston motel and restaurant on Friday, and at least five other people were hospitalized, authorities said.
Flames were shooting from the roof of the Southwest Inn, along one of Houston\’s most heavily traveled expressways, and black smoke was blanketing the area as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze.
Three firefighters were killed at the scene, while the fourth died at a hospital, according to the mayor\’s office and local medical examiner. Five other people were injured and were being treated at a hospital for chest pains or leg injuries.
The loss of life is the single worst in the history of the 116-year-old Houston Fire Department. When a flag-draped body was removed from the smoldering remains around 4 p.m., firefighters — working in swirling winds and temperatures exceeding 90 degrees — paused and saluted.
\”It\’s a very sad day for the Houston Fire Department and the city of Houston as a whole,\” , said Janice Evans, a spokeswoman for Houston Mayor Annise Parker.
Field reports indicate that the firefighters were caught in a roof collapse, said Jeff Caynon, president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association.

May 29, 2013–Senator Steve Oroho questioned today the decision by Senate Democrats to reinstate a clause in bill, S2467/S2471, that would force New Jersey to divest pension funds from thriving American companies that legally sell firearms.
\”After sensibly agreeing to remove the requirement at a May 9 public meeting, Senate Democrats have reinstated the very clause that they publicly removed,\” said Oroho (Sussex, Warren, Morris.) \”I’m disappointed that public action taken by Democrats apparently doesn’t hold up behind closed doors.\”

GLOUCESTER CITY — Like most underdogs, the Schalick High School softball team puts rankings aside and lets its play do the talking.
It certainly worked on Wednesday.
Although the Cougars were considered a long shot against one of the area’s premier teams, No. 12 Schalick continued to defy the odds as it upset defending champion and top-seed Gloucester, 3-1, in the semifinals of the South Jersey Group I playoffs.
\”We had a gameplan and we stuck to it,\” said Cougars head coach Jami Musey-Lau. \”We were feeling really confident and were definitely prepared. This is a big-time upset.\”
As they’ve done all postseason, Schalick (15-9) leaned on junior starting pitcher Janna Gaburo to navigate a normally hard-hitting Gloucester (20-6) line-up.
Even before Gaburo stepped foot in the circle, however, the Cougars had provided her with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Following a single by Kylee Barton and an error on a ground ball hit by Jessica Harrell, Courtney Miller was able to drive in the first run of the game on a base hit. Schalick would then add another on an RBI fielder’s choice by Courtney Buck.

May 28, 2013 (eJumo)–According to the official website of the World Boxing Federation, Takam took charge from the start, and was quickly able to close the distance on his taller opponent before throwing and connecting with well-timed hooks from both hands. The defending champion fought mostly on the back foot, and just didn’t seem to have an answer to the clever boxing of the challenger.
