BELLMAWR NJ–A yearly tradition going back to since when I was a kid, Bellmawr\’s St Joachim (Annunciation) Parish carnival starts Monday May 6th, and continues through Saturday May 11th.

The carnival is located directly on the parish grounds, 601 West Browning Road in Bellmawr, NJ.

Tuesday and Wednesday are listed as Family nights.

Following the \”If it works, why mess with it?\” philosophy, this year\’s carnival again features exciting rides, games, delicious food and snacks… and the legendary Bellmawr beer garden! Friday and Saturday night brings back area cover band, Stage 3. More than just musicians, they are true entertainers and really put on a great show.

I stopped over on Sunday afternoon and took a few pics of the set-up.

From the Parish Website:
Please join us from May 6th through May 11th for our Annual Parish Carnival! Wrist bands are currently on sale at the Rectory Monday through Friday and after each mass on Sunday for $35. Beginning Monday the 6th, they will be $40, so get them now!

Also, we\’re looking for sponsors for our various booths. Baked goods, cleaning baskets, prizes, etc are all being accepted by the Social Committee for use in the carnival games. If you are interested in sharing your baking skills or cleaning baskets, please call the rectory at 856-931-6307 or e-mail Marty Waters at [email protected].

Thanks so much! We look forward to sharing fun, laughter and adventure with the whole St. Joachim family!

Read on for pics taken Sunday by Meandering Mark. The calm before the opening day.

Gloucester Catholic falls in showdown

The Green Knights turned a highly anticipated showdown into a showcase for their sensational senior lefthander and their apparently underrated lineup.

On a cool, clear Saturday night in the Rockland Boulders\’ picturesque ballpark, Kaminsky pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts as St. Joseph beat Gloucester Catholic, 6-1, in a matchup of two of New Jersey\’s best baseball teams.

Kaminsky, a North Carolina recruit projected as a likely first-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June, powered through the Rams\’ lineup with a fastball in the 90-m.p.h. range and a devastating breaking ball.

He also threw about 15 to 20 change-ups, by far his most of the season.

\”That\’s the best team we faced,\” Kaminsky said of Gloucester Catholic (16-3), the No. 1 team in The Inquirer\’s South Jersey rankings as well as the No. 1 team in the Newark Star-Ledger state rankings. \”I had to break [the change-up] out.\”

Donahue: What is Really Going on Here?

Bill Donohue comments on the decision by Newark archdiocesan priest Father Michael Fugee to resign from ministry:

Father Fugee now says he violated his agreement with the Newark Archdiocese and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office; thus, his decision to step down. His dishonesty is appalling. Moreover, he has clearly impugned his character.

As I said in my report of May 1, \”What is really going on here is an attempt to sunder Archbishop Myers—Fugee is not the man they want. They want Myers, and that is because they detest what he stands for.\”

Fugee’s resignation does nothing to change my position. Indeed, had there not been calls for Myers to resign over this matter, there would have been no reason to comment on it.

There is a concerted effort on the part of left-wing Catholics and ex-Catholics, aided and abetted by some in the media, to take down a bishop. But not just any bishop: he must be a conservative. To this day, the way these activists have reacted to their hero, the disgraced former archbishop of Milwaukee, Rembert Weakland, is in stark contrast to their response to conservative bishops who have been embroiled in controversy (e.g., Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph and Newark Archbishop John Myers).

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: any priest who is guilty of committing a crime, especially sexual abuse, should have the book thrown at him; he will get no defense from the Catholic League. But when we see that the clergy of other religions, as well as public school officials, are being held to a lesser standard than our bishops, that is cause for action. Not until we get a level playing field will we back off.
