New York and Connecticut are the only states that have not legalized mixed martial arts
The sport was made illegal in 1997 over concerns of fighting safety and the violent nature of the sport. A medical study performed in 2006 showed that injuries were quite similar to other sports such as football and boxing. It has even has evolved since the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993 to make the competitors comparable by putting them into different weight categories, several different unions still oppose it because it sexist behavior and misogynism.
