Painful Options Ahead: Detroit to Default on $2.5 Billion Debt

JUDY WOODRUFF: Today, the city of Detroit and its creditors were presented with a series of painful options. Retired city workers were warned of significant cuts in pensions and health insurance, and creditors were told the city won\’t be able to pay them back.

The day started with an announcement that the government already defaulted on some debt. It got worse from there.

Pennsylvania Man Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Selling Thousands of Dollars Worth of Firearms to New Jersey Resident

NEWARK, NJ—A Pennsylvania man was sentenced today to 24 months in prison for illegally selling firearms and ammunition on multiple occasions for thousands of dollars in cash, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Eduardo Velasquez, 63, of Reading, Pennsylvania, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge William H. Walls to an information charging him with one count of illegally dealing in firearms. Judge Walls imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.

1985 Cold Case Murder Solved

Dennis Township, Cape May County, N.J. – Today, detectives from the New Jersey State Police Major Crime Unit, Woodbine Station, and the Cape May County Prosecutors Office charged a man currently incarcerated at East Jersey State Prison with the 1985 cold case murder of Carl Robinson. William Tozer, 53, was served with the murder warrant during an unrelated court appearance at the Cape May Superior Court on Monday afternoon.

Jersey Coast Anglers Association (JCAA) will hold its 19th Annual Fluke Tournament on August 24th, 2013 and the Awards Ceremony is scheduled for September 6th at the Golden Nugget Hotel/Casino in Atlantic City. The Grand Prize this year is between $5,000-$10,000* in cash and the first place port prize is still $1,200.

Maria \” Elena\” Rios (nee Leal), age 77, of Bellmawr, formerly of Barrington, died peacefully with her family in her heart and at her side on July 16, 2013.

Beloved wife of Juan \”John\” for 54 years. Loving mother of John Rios (Judy) of Brigantine and Elena Rogers (Bob). Proud grandmother of Lauren, Brian and Bob Rogers, Jr. and Joey Bove and Johnny Bove. Sister of Jimmy Leal, Celeste DeLeon, Oscar Leal, Cecilia Perez, Ida Hernandez, Gloria Cofie and the late Leonard and David Leal. Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Maria \”Elena\” was a longtime employee of Edmund Scientific Co. (Edmund Industrial Optics) in Barrington for 27 years. She enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family. She will be truly missed.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her viewing from 10 to 11am Saturday morning at GARDNER FUNERAL HOME, RUNNEMEDE.

Funeral Service and entombment will follow at 11:30am at New St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Bellmawr.

Beloved husband of the late Anne (nee Kellenbenz). Devoted father of Robert Hagan (Bonnie), Janet Neigenfind (Jack), Kathleen Fink (Rick) and the late Barbara Bond. Loving Pop of Jacquelyn Mallon (Dave), James Morrison, Janine Morrison, Matthew Bond (Taylor), Brian Fink (Molly), Jonathan Fink, Tara Soligan (Rob), Alexander Fink and Neil Neigenfind. Great Pop of David Mallon, II (Nicole), Jessica McLaughlin (Brian), Katrina Mallon (Chris), Matthew Bond, Jr., Madelyn Fink, Liam Fink and Anna Soligan.
