Jason I. Hughes (DOB 7/14/87) was denied a requested reduction in his $50,000 bail today (9/5) on charges that he was carrying a rifle and 337 rounds of ammunition during an 8/27/14 visit to his ex-wife’s residence in Glassboro, in defiance of a restraining order.
Although the homeless former Millville resident was carrying the Ruger SR 556 unassembled in a bag, \”I can’t think of a reason why you would bring an assault weapon to visit your wife when you have a restraining order,\” Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker Jr. said in refusing to alter Hughes’ bail.
Noting that Hughes also was also illegally carrying several 10-round ammunition magazines, Assistant Gloucester County Prosecutor Vincent Malfitano said his office \”has very strong objections\” to a bail reduction.
Hughes’ lawyer, Rebecca Donnarumma, said her client made no threats at his former spouse’s home and argued that transporting a weapon that was not ready to fire was \”a little less scary a situation.\”
