With all the bad press surrounding print news nowadays — declining readership and ad revenues, cutbacks in staff — you would think that journalists-for-hire were as common as words on a page. But there\’s a critical difference between the old print media and new online media: expertise.

Where print news aimed for the widest possible coverage, online media is overwhelmingly specialized. Name a topic, and chances are, you’ll find a website devoted to its latest happenings.
