ST. LOUIS (CN) – Two journalists who were arrested covering the Ferguson protests have settled their federal lawsuits against police – one for $8,500 and expungement of his record and one for expungement but no money.
The ACLU filed the lawsuits last year against the St. Louis County police on behalf of Gerald D. Yingst III of News2Share.com and Turkish reporter Bilgin Sasmaz.

ST. LOUIS (CN) – A federal grand jury indicted a former Missouri police officer in a small town near Ferguson on charges of conspiring with the now-imprisoned former mayor to arrest a political foe.
Former Pine Lawn police Lt. Steven Blackeney had sued the city in January, claiming he was fired for blowing the whistle in an FBI investigation of Mayor Sylvester Caldwell.
Caldwell was sentenced in July to 33 months in federal prison for extortion.

NEWARK – The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs announced today that, during the second quarter of 2015, it has issued Notices of Violation to 89 contractors, seeking $630,556.42 in consumer restitution and civil penalties.
\”With New Jersey well into peak home improvement season, we are actively protecting consumers by responding to complaints and identifying contractors who violate our registration and advertising laws,\” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. \”For their part, consumers can protect themselves by learning as much as possible about any contractor – including whether the business is registered to conduct home improvement work in New Jersey – before signing a contract.\”

PHILADELPHIA – Francisco Acosta, 39, of Reading, PA, pleaded guilty today to an information charging him with conspiracy to commit bribery offenses, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger. At the time of the offense and until this morning, Acosta was the President of Reading City Council.
Certain anti-corruption statutes were enacted in Reading, PA, to limit the influence of money on political candidates and public officials. Section 1012 of Reading’s Code of Ethics establishes limits on campaign contributions to candidates seeking public office in Reading and Section 1006(H) of the Code prohibits the awarding of \”no-bid contracts\” to donors who have given campaign contributions in excess of those limits.
