CNBNews Editor Recalls the Newark Uprising

William E. Cleary Sr.  | Cleary’s Notebook News

EDITOR’S NOTE: On August 30, Typepad, the host of our blog for the past 20 years, announced that they were shutting down its business on September 30. We had 70,000 articles posted on its site; they gave us four weeks to move the articles to a new host, or they would be lost forever. We will be republishing many of the old articles in the weeks and months ahead. The Newark article first appeared on August 1, 2024.

NEWARK, NJ (August 1, 2024)(CNBNews)–Although the Newark riot in 1967 happened 57 years ago, the memory of that time is still fresh in my mind. The 50th memorial anniversary of the Newark riots was remembered on July 12, 2017. Some of us who were there called it “The Battle of Newark.”  The five-day conflict broke out on July 12, 1967. Soldiers from South Jersey who belonged to the 50th Armored Division,1st Battalion, 114th Infantry Regiment, also known as the “Jersey Blues,” were called early in the morning on that day to report to their respective armories either in Woodbury or Pitman.  The same call was being sent to Guardsmen stationed at other armories in New Jersey.

Schumer’s Shutdown Continues

The Democrats have voted to keep the government shutdown 12 times now. Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are holding the government hostage. They own this shutdown, and the government will remain closed as long as they persist in their temper tantrum.

The truth is, they are actively working to undo the guardrails Republicans put in place to ensure that American citizens—not illegal aliens—receive taxpayer-funded healthcare, all at the expense of the American people.

Last Sunday, I was honored to deliver remarks at the 45th Annual Night to Honor Israel.

The word tells us that what man means for evil, God can use for good. Following October 7th, the nation of Israel resolved to eliminate Hamas utterly and completely. Doing so is unambiguously good. It is unambiguously good for Israel, and it is unambiguously good for America. But second, October 7th provided a moment of clarity, absolute, acute clarity. In my view, there is no subjectivity as to what transpired on October 7th.  It is a choice between good and evil. It is a choice between civilization and barbarism. And every one of us, every elected official, every pastor, every American, everyone across the globe, has a choice to make. With whom do you stand? That clarity is important; that clarity revealed the bilious antisemitism within our colleges, within our universities, within the radical left of the Democrat Party.

How South Jersey Residents are Finding Entertainment Online

Online gaming has become much more than a pastime for South Jersey residents; it’s a brand new way to stay connected, entertained and relaxed. From Camden to Cape May, casino apps are certainly bringing community and comfort into people’s homes with just a tap.

In South Jersey, leisure time has taken on a digital twist. What once meant road trips to Atlantic City or gathering at the boardwalk now happens on screens, where the excitement of the casino fits neatly into everyday life. More than just play, online gaming has really become a shared experience; blending community, connection and fun for locals across Gloucester City and beyond.

The Shift in South Jersey’s Gaming Culture

For decades, the flashing lights and rolling dice of Atlantic City drew players from across South Jersey. It wasn’t just about the games; it was about the atmosphere, camaraderie and energy from being part of something bigger. But times have changed. Today, that same sense of thrill is finding new life online, where you can enjoy your favorite games without leaving the comfort of home.

Casino apps have made gaming accessible to anyone with a smartphone or laptop. From slots to blackjack, the experiences once confined to casino floors are now available anytime, day or night. The transition has been smooth for many South Jersey locals, who find playing online fits easily into their work, family and social routines.
