
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Brycen Williams scored 28 points but Mary Washington (3-0) used an 11-point run in overtime to defeat Rowan, 94-87, in men’s basketball action.
With the game tied, 81-81, the Eagles scored 11 straight points to begin overtime, taking a 92-81 lead. Williams hit a three at :42, but it was too late for the Profs to make up the difference.
Williams made eight three-pointers in the game while Taz Cantey scored 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Khalil Baker had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Profs while Dan Mason grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Rowan (0-2) trailed by seven, 56-49, with over 13 minutes to play but got a three-pointer from Skip Burton and two from Williams to tie the game at 63-63. From there, the Profs would use a 17-8 run, ending in back-to-back layups by Dan Mason and Michael Pirone to take a 79-71 lead with 2:10 to play.
UMW countered with a 10-0 run to overtake the Profs and lead, 81-79, with :24 to play, but Pirone hit a layup with :05 left to send the game into overtime.
The first half was tight as teams traded leads throughout, with UMW taking the biggest lead, 40-35, on a three-pointer at the buzzer for halftime.
Rowan made 16-of-38 from three-point range (42.1%) but turned the ball over 17 times, while the Eagles just six turnovers.
Rowan will head to Drew on Saturday afternoon and then play its home opener against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, November 18 at 6 p.m.
