Commissioners commemorate 84th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

On Friday, December 5 aboard the Battleship New Jersey, the Camden County Board of Commissioners will join members of the Gloucester County Board of Commissioners and local veterans to honor the anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

Sunday, December 7 marks the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a military base on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Within just two hours, 18 U.S. warships were sunk or damaged, 188 aircrafts were destroyed, and 2,403 American servicemen and women were killed. The attack marked the beginning of the United States involvement in World War II.

“Pearl Harbor forever changed our nation’s history, and today we honor the heroes whose sacrifice defined that moment,” said Commissioner Jennifer Fleisher, liaison to Veterans Affairs. “Though decades have passed since that tragic day, we must continue to remember what happened on December 7, 1941, and the lasting impact it had on our nation.”

The event will also feature the presentation of the ReverendPeter Molnar Award to Greg Murphy, Director of Taps for Veterans, a non-profit organization that provides live buglers for military funerals, at no-cost. The award is presented yearly at the Pearl Harbor Ceremony to individuals or organizations who are significantly involved in veterans’ activities in the county and across the state.
