OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING: 400 East Rockland Street

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting and asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. The incident occurred in the city’s Feltonville neighborhood following a confrontation over a package theft.

The incident began at approximately 5:30 PM on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Officers were initially responding to a radio call regarding a crowd and a person with a weapon at the 4900 block of D Street. While on the scene, officers heard multiple gunshots originating from the nearby 400 block of East Rockland Street and proceeded toward the gunfire.

The preliminary investigation reveals that a 50-year-old male homeowner on East Rockland Street was monitoring his security cameras when he observed an unidentified male attempting to steal a package from his front steps.

The homeowner exited his residence armed with a handgun. While confronting the suspect, the homeowner pointed his firearm at the ground and discharged the weapon. The suspect fled on foot, but then turned and fired several rounds back at the homeowner before continuing to run.

Two responding officers encountered the fleeing suspect. During the encounter, the suspect fired his weapon toward one of the officers (identified as Officer #1). Officer #1 returned fire several times.

The suspect managed to evade capture and was lost in the surrounding area.

Authorities recovered a .40 caliber handgun and a jacket believed to belong to the suspect on the 400 block of Rockland Street. Investigators also noted that a vehicle parked on the north side of the street was struck by gunfire during the exchange.

Both officers involved in the incident were equipped with body-worn cameras that were activated during the encounter. In accordance with standard department protocol, Officer #1, who discharged their weapon, has been placed on administrative duty.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned Hispanic male, stocky build, with a possible goatee wearing a brown coat, black pants, and grey/light grey sneakers. He remains at large.

The FOP Lodge 5 is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Note: “Officer 1” is an officer who discharged their firearm during the incident. 

“Officer A” is an officer who was involved in the incident but did not discharge their firearm.
