Essex County Man Arrested for Attempting to Engage in Sexual Conduct with Minor

Camden County, NJ – An Essex County man has been arrested and charged for attempting to engage in sexual conduct with an underage girl whom he met online, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay.

Fred Newman, 39, of Montclair, NJ is charged with one count of 2nd-degree Attempted Sexual Assault, two counts of 3rd-degree Attempted Sending Obscene Material to a Minor, and one count of 3rd-degree Attempted Endangering the Welfare of a Child. 

On December 12, 2025, a male suspect – later identified as Newman – began communicating online with a person who he believed was a 14-year-old girl.  Meanwhile, the person chatting with him was actually an undercover detective from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crimes Unit.  During the conversation, Newman sent multiple explicit photos and videos to the girl and expressed that he wished to engage in sexual conduct. After further investigation, detectives ultimately identified Newman as the male from the online chat and charged him on February 3, 2026.

On February 10, 2026, the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force –Newark Division and Camden Division located Newman and took him into custody in Newark, NJ.  He was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility.
