Matthew Craig DeGailler, known lovingly to all as Matt, was born on December 20, 1986, in Lady of Lords, and he passed from this world on March 30, 2026, in Camden, New Jersey, leaving behind a life marked by devotion, service, and a heart that gave freely to all who knew him.
Matt was a son, a brother, an uncle, a grandson, a nephew, and a friend whose presence brought warmth and steadiness to those around him. He was the beloved son of Louis Craig DeGailler and his stepmother, Kimberly DeGailler, and he was also cherished by his stepfather, Joseph Marino. He was preceded in death by his late mother, Kristine DeGailler, and his late grandfather, Tom Kennedy, whose memories remained ever dear within the family. He is survived by his uncle, Tom Kennedy, his living grandparents, Marge Kennedy, Louis DeGailler, and Joann DeGailler, his brothers, Craig DeGailler and his wife Jen Myers, Jason Houser and his wife Courtney, and Sean Houser, and his sister, Heather Menardi and her husband Den. Matt held his niece and nephew, Savannah and Zachary, in the deepest affection, and he loved them with all his heart.
From his earliest days, Matt carried himself with a spirit both humble and strong. He was educated at Audubon High School, where he laid the foundation for a life of responsibility and care. In his working years, he served as a 911 operator, answering the call of those in distress with calm and courage. He also worked as a rehab counselor, offering guidance and support to those who sought a steadier path. In all such labors, he showed a rare gift for compassion, and he gave of himself in ways that eased burdens and lifted weary hearts.
Among the many honors of his life, none shone brighter than his service with the Mt. Ephraim Fire Department. Matt was a member of that noble company, and the calling of a volunteer fireman was, above all else, the work he loved most. He found purpose in service, dignity in sacrifice, and brotherhood in the shared duty of protecting others. He did not seek praise, yet his deeds spoke plainly of a man who understood that the truest greatness lies in giving oneself for the good of others. To stand ready in time of need was to him no burden, but a privilege, and he embraced that sacred duty with steadfast pride.
Matt also knew how to delight in the simple graces of life. He loved the shore, and Wildwood held a special place within his heart. The salt air, the rolling water, and the easy promise of the coast brought him joy and peace. He loved fishing and crabbing, and he found happiness upon the water whenever he could be upon a boat, as though the sea itself called to him with a voice he gladly answered. In these pleasures he found rest, and in them those who loved him saw a man who cherished the world not for grandeur, but for the honest beauty of its gifts.
Though his earthly journey has ended, the memory of Matt remains bright and enduring. He was a man of good spirit, generous heart, and loyal devotion, and he leaves behind a legacy written not in stone, but in the lives he touched. His family and friends shall remember his kindness, his humor, his steadfastness, and the love he freely gave. In the hearts of those who knew him, he shall not be absent, for love keeps faithful watch where death can never wholly prevail.
May he be remembered with gratitude and with peace. Though he has departed this mortal stage, the story of Matt’s life shall continue in every cherished memory, every act of kindness inspired by his example, and every heart that was made better by having known him.
