The idea of corporate naming rights is becoming more popular throughout the country. A story in the New York Times last highlighted three examples.

Four years ago, ShopRite gave Brooklawn, N.J., $100,000 toward the high school\’s new gym, named the ShopRite of Brooklawn Center. Rust-Oleum gave $100,000 to a Chicago suburb for \”Rust-Oleum Field.\” And for $500,000, the Everglades High School football stadium in Florida bears the name of Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union.

The Times reported that corporate sponsorship goes beyond athletic facilities, all the way to advertisements on school buses.

This is the financial future of public education.

HANGING LIGHTS – Mount Ephraim Department of Public Works employee Harry Smith finishes checking a few bulbs to the lights on the town Christmas tree outside the Mary Bray School just before the towns annual Christmas Parade up Kings Highway. Santa and Mrs. Claus have been making a special visit to town at the end of the parade each year for the past 13 years and have been lighting the town tree ever since to officially start the holiday season in Mount Ephraim.

January is \”Youth Month\” with Rider Athletics and all kids 18 and under get free admission to all home men\’s and women\’s basketball and wrestling events.

Groups and teams are also welcome and discounted tickets are available for parents and/or coaches who will be attending with them.

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY – Matt DeGailler of Mount Ephraim is seen exiting the elevator with step-father Joe Marini as the party of over 100 joined in celebrating the \”SURPRISE\” entrance.

 

A fabulous surprise birthday party was held at Tommy G\’s in Audubon to mark the special event.

 

Matt was joined by family, friends and many close friends from the Camden City and Mount Ephraim Fire Department\’s to honor him and joined in \”Roasting\” Matt for his birthday.

In \”The Legendary Neversink,\” (New York: Sky Horse Publishing, 2007), editor Justin Askins incorporates some of the best prose ever written on the Neversink River. Askins has created a compilation of the who\’s who of outdoor writers. Names like Sparse Gray Hackle, Leonard Wright Jr., Theodore Gordon, and Ray Bergman populate this book with Neversink stories.

On December 16, 2007, age 81, a Haddonfield resident since 1953, died of congestive heart failure at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
Mr. Derham grew up in Freeport, Long Island , and was a graduate of Ursinus College where he earned a BS degree in Chemistry.
Mr. Derham is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Warren Derham, his two sons, Gregory and Thomas, daughter in law, Suzanne, six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brooke, Mark, Thomas Jackson, JonathanMatthew, Jesse Kyle and two sisters, Elaine and Gladys. Mr. Derham was predeceased by his son Joseph, Jr. in 1993.
Mr. Derham held the position of Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley. He was employed as an investment manager for 47 years up until his retirement this past June.
Mr. Derham was very active in community affairs and for many years served on the town\’s school board. He was Chairman ofthe Finance, Athletic, and Curriculum Committee. He oversaw the construction and replacement of the town\’s Middle School, expansion of the elementary schools, and the addition to the town\’s high school. Mr. Derham chaired a Board Committee that purchased Scout Field for the school district.
In addition, Mr. Derham helped draw up the plan for the development of the Radnor field complex. He served the Little League for twenty years as Trustee, Player Agent, Coach, and Manager and was the treasurer for the Midget Football League for seven years. In addition, he led an effort to expand the Little League complex to include two additional fields.
Mr. Derham originated the planning and construction of a Memorial to World War II, Korean, & Vietnam Veterans which is used by the town fathers during Memorial Day services.
Mr. Derham was founder and Trustee of The Robert Fulton Memorial Scholarship Fund and has served as Chairman of the Selection Committee. This fund has provided financial assistance to many students all over the South Jersey area.
Mr. Derham served his country in the United States Army in the 334th Infantry 84 Division 9th Army and took part in combat in the defense of the Siegfried Line and participated in the Battle of the Bulge where he and his division were awarded the Bronze Star for their actions. He was awarded The Purple Heart for wounds received in that battle.
Mr. Derham\’s family will receive friends Wed. evening from 7- 9 PM at KAIN-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield. His Funeral Mass will follow Thursday morning, 10AM, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield. Interment will be private.
Memorial donations in Mr. Derham\’s name may be made to the Bobby Fulton Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 14, Haddonfield, NJ 08033.

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey men\’s basketball team hosted the Beavers of Buena Vista University on Wednesday night in Packer Hall in a non-conference match-up. Senior guard Rahn Franklin (Kansas City, MO/North) shot back to back three-point baskets in the final minute of the second overtime period to lift his team to an 84-77 win, snapping a two-game losing streak. With the win, BVU is now 7-3 overall, while TCNJ drops to 2-5.

BVU opened with a 7-3 run to open the game. TCNJ would lead twice by as many as eight points, before the Beavers would regain the lead (21-20 at 3:03). By the end of the first stanza there were six lead changes and three ties as BVU held a 27-24 lead on a three-point basket by junior guard Andre Wagner (Omaha, NE/Northwest). Wagner led his team in the first half with 10 points, while junior forward Matt Cleveland (McCook Lake, SD/Heelan) added eight points in the first half.

TCNJ\’s junior guard Jeff Molinelli (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) had nine points in the first half, while senior co-captain Mark Aziz (Hackettstown, NJ/West Morris Central) had seven points and three steals for the Lions.

After never owning a lead in the second half, TCNJ would climb back from being down by 13 points (55-42, 6:04) and would tie the game on a three-pointer by Aziz with 8.2 seconds left and send the game to overtime tied at 64-64. The game would go to an additional period of overtime tied at 73-73 all and head to a second period of overtime play

TCNJ would have two players foul out of the extra action, Molinelli and sophomore Jay Frank (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial). Molinelli would finish with nine points, while Frank netted a season-high 14 points off the bench.

By game\’s end, BVU\’s Wagner added 20 points, while Cleveland added a double-double on 17 points with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Rahn finished with 12 points, while senior center Adam Arndorfer (Corwith, IA/Bishop Garrigan) added 15 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor.

Aziz led all of TCNJ\’s players with his season-high 22 points, while senior guard Jeff Warner (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) tallied his first career-double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Aziz hit the three-point basket on a pass from Warner with 7.8 seconds left in regulation to send the game to the overtime session after tying play at 64-64.

Suddenly on December 17, 2007, of Audubon, NJ. Age 68 years.
Beloved husband of Nancy J. Danks (Nee-Hansen). Dear father of Mario J. (Ann) Del Monte III of Medford, NJ,Cynthia (Russell) Shaner of Haddon Heights, NJ, Suzanne (John) Fox, Karen (Anthony) Parker both of Magnolia, NJ, Melody McFadden, Karen Montayne and Diane Thomas, all of California. Also survived by 18 grandchildren, his mother, Mary Danks of Rockland, MA and two sisters, Mary (Rick) Osborne of Vancouver, BC and Theresa (Bob) Messina of Kissimmee, FL.

Mr. Danks was a 32-year employee of Furman Lumber Co., Merchantville, NJ and a former employee of the Olive Garden, Cherry Hill, NJ. He was also a valued employee of Kress Wine of Cherry Hill, NJ.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 11 AM to 12 Noon at the FOSTER-WARNE FUNERAL HOME, 250 White Horse Pike, Audubon, NJ. Funeral Service will follow at 12 Noon. Interment private. The family requests in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 150 Monument Dr., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
