28 Students Graduate from the 2007 Mount Ephraim DARE Program

By Bill Bates
NEWS Correspondent

The Mount Ephraim D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program Graduation was held on Monday, June 4, 2007, at the Deptford Skate Zone.

The D.A.R.E. Program is held for 5th grade students at the R.W. Kershaw School annually that participate in a 10 week program on drug awareness and resistance education.

This year was the first time that the D.A.R.E. class was taught by local Mount Ephraim Police Officer Scott Pezzano. The program was formally taught by the Camden County Sheriff\’s Department. Officer Kinkade had taught the program for nine years at R.W.K. before being re-assigned within the department. The Mount Ephraim Police saw the need to keep this educational program moving forward and decided to take-over last year.

The MEPD recently put into service a new D.A.R.E. vehicle that is fully functional as a police cruiser. The vehicle was dedicated as a D.A.R.E. vehicle to give back to the students of Mount Ephraim and will serve as a reminder to the students each and every time they see the vehicle on the streets.

Four students won Darren DARE Lions Awards for their essays. Those students were Erica Gilmore, Morgan Zielinski, Jessica Miles, and Alison Guldin. The D.A.R.E Graduation party was a great success and the Mount Ephraim Police Department along with the staff of the Mount Ephraim School District wish all of the children much success in all of their challenges and choices in life.

Braddock Doesn\’t Make SAL All-Star Team

What I can\’t understand is how starting pitcher Zach Braddock, outfielder/first baseman Michael Brantley, outfielder Chuckie Caufield and third baseman Taylor Green were left off the South Atlantic League All-Star team. Braddock played baseball at Gloucester Catholic and for the Brooklawn American Legion.

Consider:

N Braddock owns a 3-1 record and 1.21 earned run average with 66 strikeouts compared to 14 walks in 44 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .166 against him. He doesn\’t have enough innings pitched because of his recent stint on the disabled list with tendonitis. Otherwise, his strikeouts per nine innings rate (13.31) would lead minor league baseball. see more

Fast Thinking Brooklawn Kids Help in Capture of a Criminal Suspect

Bill,

Today we got a frantic call from my 10- year old from what my wife could gather was someone had just attempted to steal his cell phone. My son was with three other 11- year- olds so my wife and I rushed from Gaetano\’s around the corner and saw my son\’s friends. They told me that the kid was on a bike and described him. I let my wife out to comfort my son and his friends and then took off after this kid.

As I was driving on Browning Road I spotted this kid and called Gaetano\’s and the owner ran out and grabbed the kid. Within minutes the police arrived with my wife and son. One police officer said they had been looking for this guy. They arrested the kid and when we were summoned back to the police department we found out that this kid is really 19- year- old from Gloucester City; and that he had been sexually assaulting kids in the area recently. A sketch was to go out today about him.

These 11- year- olds acted properly by running to a house. Calling 911 and getting a good description.

Fishing Report from Capt. Bob Bevan

The \”Gracie\” has been laid up for the last few weeks with engine problems, but she is now \”ready to go\”. We\’ll be taking her out for Mako\’s this Saturday.

In the meantime, flounders are in and Scott and his wife Deneen, along with John and Terry Flynn connected with nine keeper flounders up to 22\”. They fished from a small boat out in the Stone Harbor back bays.

Stripers are on their way out. Poverty Beach in Cape May has been hot and cold. Babe Berglund took a nice 42\” bass from the surf on Saturday night.

Weak fish have been taken around the rocks on the Cape May jetties. Some fish up to 10 lbs., but it\’s nothing like the old days. The artificial reefs have been spotty, good one day and nothing the next day. The water temperature is up to 64 degrees in the ocean and above 67 degrees in the Bay.

Looking at our log from last year, flounder should be appearing around 19 buoy for the next three weeks. Still have some weekends open. To book a charter, call Eva-Parker Fishing Charters at 856-456-5511. Until later, keep a tight line.
